Default Z06 tested on top ZR1

This is a good thread to get going on.,Road and Track tested all corvettes from mild to wild.volume 63 number 8.just recieved it in the mail. They tested standered corvette, grand sport,Z06 and ZR1.
The CR-6 was included in the test

The engineers preferred the Z06 overall due to its 50/50 balance on track, and the big block feel and power. .

The ZR1 may have been quicker at the Nurburgring, but Tommy Milner was about 1 sec. faster around spring mountain in the ZO6 than in the ZR1.
Engineers state the ZR1 had weight in frount due to supercharger
etc.that threw of proper balance off to get full weight distribution.

CR6 first 55 car lengths ahead Z06 , 7 cars back ZR1 ,Grand Sport 26 lengths regular corvette 59 lengths .
Z06 took the track compition hands down. The CR6 is the corvette that won at Lemans

on the straight 1/4 mile Z06 11.7 -ZR1 11.5
for 30.000- more I cant see if the money is worth it
i have the Z06 always wondered if the difference is worth it.

Ther is a lot of testing info for all corvette owners Road and Track is a must for all of us get the magazine Great stuff. let the thread begin.
Thanks Richard Truman Milton Delware

The Z06 with the Z07 package is certainly the way to go....and of you need more power that can certainly be had all the way up to 1000HP if needed with the LS7. There is no replacement for displacement.

I enjoyed the article as well. Not that it is a real issue with me but I also tend towards the Z07 in my wishes. Some of the stories about the 427 make me wonder though. I don't hang out in C6 enough to know if there is any real basis to the rumours or if it is mostly tripe, like the concerns over the LT5. I guess the comparison could be made too, of our ZR-1's & the 96 LT4's. If I am not mistaken, you had both...what do you say? A claimed, roughly 70hp difference in the C4's and a little more than 100hp in the C6's & I could look up the weights but not going to, I'm sure the difference is substantial though. Based on the article, it seems the ZR1 likes longer tracks than the one they were on for this write-up.

I considered a LT4 GS but not a lot...the ZR-1 was iconic to me & in the end that is the only choice I could have made. The LT4 might make more sense in the world I live in but if I worried about sensible I should have bought a truck, right? I'm thinking it would be the same way if I ever had to actually choose between the C6's. I might think differently if I tracked often but based on the way I use my Corvette now...I'm afraid I would go with the ZR1 ....now that is used, when the pricing gets a little closer. As far as ~90 thousand for a new Z07 or 140k for a new ZR1...I don't see me having to worry about that choice any time soon. Not to get into a pricing argument but if there was closer to a 15 or 20k difference in used C6Z's like 45k or/& 65k(yes, I realize those prices are unrealistic) then maybe the choice would get tougher.

I've owned a 96LT4 simultaneously with my ZR-1 and after driving them both back to back it is pretty much a night and day difference. My LT4 was no slouch and ran as perfect as an LT4 can...it doesn't come close to the power of an LT5. I think giving up 138HP in the Z06 vs the ZR-1 in the C6 Generation will make a big difference in feel on the street, but in the right hands on a tight track the lighter weight car will hang real tough. I bet a great driver can turn some serious lap times there in a miata.

I still believe the Z07 equipped Z06 holds the most potential in terms of power. In fact Tomball Chevrolet had a Z07 Built by Henessey here in houston that was equipped with a supercharger detuned to 750HP and would have a 2 year warranty.

These threads usually come from a Z06 owner who cant afford the ZR1
Not saying the OP is but sheesh.
These are the same brand cars are they not whats the big dividing factor you see so often in "My Gen is better my model is better" .

Weirdos!

Really who cares?! Is it going to make you feel better driving it in traffic, or if someone walks you at a stoplight grand prix one rolls their window down and yells "Yeah but Road and Track says my Corvette can..."

There I feel better now lol

all I am saying is that if you want to have the fastest C6 possible the Z06 with the LS7 is going to make more power with mods than the LS9. Stock for stock the ZR1 is better. Whether it is Henessey or another tuner the Z06 will get 1000HP or more. Anyone know of big HP LS9's other than those with a pulley swap and tune that get to 725HP.

Although, if I had the money I would buy a brand new ZR1. It would go nicer in the garage net to my 94. I also think 638HP is enough. I think it would be even more fun having a C4 that can smoke a new Vette.

I have had (yeah too many cars, but pertinent to this discussion, in order since 07) 05 C6 z51, 07 Z06, 08 C6z51, 08 Z06, (and not so pertinent) two 08 Viper coupes, 91 Zr1. The Viper is my favorite, NEXT TO MY CURRENT 91 - no blasted nannies. They may help you go faster under certain conditions, but at the edge, on aggressive street or better still track driving, I'll take the Zr-1 (or Vipers) any day. I don't like things overriding my decisions (and no, i don't generally make bad ones - so, now, go ahead and poke fun). The ZR-1 was a blast to drive at Road Atlanta last weekend, HPDE3. It's very tossible and very predictable.
