LT5 based C3 Restomod

LT5 based C3 Restomod
Hi All -
Have a few questions.
1. Has anyone stuffed an LT5 and 6 speed into a C3? If so, all of the normal questions, how well did it fit, how hard was it, etc? headers? Exhaust manifold, fit under the hood, integrating electronics?
2. What would I expect to pay to find an engine and gearbox. Found one on Ebay for 7k total, but 80k miles. Guaranteed to run, but...
3. What does it cost to rebuild an LT5 if I find one? I know small blocks but have been lusting after one of these.
If anyone has a motor and gearbox I am looking assuming I am not insane to try it. I am not sure I can afford a new crate motor for this project as it is for my son.
Thanks
Craig

I've seen a yellow 80-82 w/LT5 on this site before,Craig. Ted Dempsey is a member here and on the other site, too. He is also wanting to swap an LT5 into his 68 roadster. You might check out his thread over there.

I am not sure on the C3 questions but I am just about complete on an LT5 motor build, a 380 stroker. I guess the question is are you planning on moding the motor or building it back to stock. The stroker I am building, roughly ran me around $14,000. That is offset ground crank, ported heads, new pistons, liners, rings, bearings, stage I cams and ported top end. Going stock, you can reduce this price significantly.

Yours sounds great though, how many HP and RPM are you expecting?
Thanks

If you stay with original pistons and liners and minimize the machine work, you can really cut the cost....BUT....If your pulling it apart anyway, why not stroke it, JMTC. I am hoping to be just south of 500 HP, haven't seen any actual dyno #'s on a 380 stroker. Mark Haibeck is now doing a 385 engine package which he has getting 575 HP at the crank.

First, let me affirm that I LOVE the ZR-1 and it's LT-5 powerplant.
However, with the plethora of GM Peformance Crate motors, as well as others that are easily available, why shove a very large square peg into a very round hole?
Likely answer is exactly the reason for doing it is the uniqueness, but for far less money, and off the shelf parts you could stuff a 572 into that C-3, or even an LS based motor, of any range, and have a killer resto-mod, without having to manufacture a number of your own parts.
Hats off to those that have done, are doing, or will do it, but to hear that 572 fire up at the GM display at Carlisle a couple of years ago, my ZR-1 even became envious!
Good Luck, and keep us posted with your progress!

A 480 or 530 hp GM crate motor would be the way to go for a C3,IMO. However,if I were building a C2 restomod,an LT5 w/6L80 would be my first choice.

Are you suggesting the LT5 works for C2 but not C3 or just that is your preference?
I keep looking for an LT5 complete take out, as the new crate motors are a bit much for this project.
Thanks!

Here is a shot of a LS1 I did in a kit car, but put vintage looking modern operating Kinsle EFI. It would be fun to do something like this to get Best of Both worlds, but exceeds the budget of this particular project as my son is involved

Is that your Ultima,Craig?

NO this is a Lola T70 Replica from GD Cars. We were looking at being the US importer of these component cars. This was the first one we built to show what could be done.
We built a bunch of Ultima's all with different drivetrains including a twin turbo 427 (C5R) small block with our custom integrated intercooler.

I think a c3 lt5 build would be awesome
I've got a 68 "in the pipeline" for a winter project
either a TT 4.8 LS motor, or a 496 BB I have waiting to howl
I'm leaning towards the turbo build if I can swing it

Since that LT5 is already out of the car, rebuilding it shouldn't cost a fortune and if I was a betting man, that engine probably doesn't even need a rebuild. If you buy it,you're also getting a ZF trans and Dana 44 rear
