Default Some questions on my 95 ZR1

What are most owners using as far as oil and filters? Should I just use what the owners manual states or is there a better alternative?

I dont know if anyone would be interested or price to ask but Iam going to switch out the ORIGINAL tires on my 95ZR1 in the Spring. The tires have 4,067 miles as of now. I dont plan to have the car judged but was wondering if I should just keep them stored if a future owner wants them?

I know this is a loaded question but what are some low cost mods to help the ZR1 breath/run better and cooler or is this not needed.? I want to keep the car as close to stock as possible with reversible mods and enjoy it as is since I have a Ferrari to go real crazy with.

I have a lift at my Park City home where the Z will be headed in the Spring; would I be able to change all my fluids(besides oil, antifreeze) or is this a pretty involved task?

I guess finally what I want to know is what would you guys do if this was your Z as far as a health check.?
TIA Kevin

Kevin,

Keep those tires stored in bags for the possible future.

I run Napa filters because they hold and retain a fair amount of oil after sitting for time. As far as oil goes mine gets Mobil 1 high mileage 10w-40 because it contains more zinc which is required by older flat tappet lifters. Some use Amsoil.

As far as more power the sky is the limit, headers, portwork, cams, exhaust just to name a few. Remember most mods for this car will equal if not surpass the ferrari modifications dollar wise.

Changing all the fluids as you plan is really the only maintence items to worry about, easy enough task to do on your lift in about an hour.

My opinion differs from most, cars like you own are becoming scarce and they are only original once. Put a new set of tires on and drive it sparingly, have fun with it while preserving what it truly was twenty years ago.

Brad

Thanks Brad,
I guess Iam really caught between preservation and driving it,lol...I just could not turn down such a rare car and I know I will not probably be putting more than 1K miles on it a year so thats not a problem. I guess I bought more of a collector than a driver, lol
I guess I should just keep it as close to factory as possible and not engine mod it at all. Kevin

LT5/ZR-1 Fluids

Minimum Restoration of a 1990 ZR-1

I start with a compression check and install ALL new plugs.......shooting for 215 within 5psi on all cylinders.....then I install differential Drain as part of changing ALL fluids.....then I block TB coolant at the Injector Housing.....then I install ALL New Injectors (I use RC 205s)......then I touch up the starter Solenoid contacts and replace Armature Bearings as required.......then I install the Starter Relay....then I clean the radiator area of trash and install the Debree screen........when I have the Plenum off I check and fix ALL vacuum leaks........then.....I install SS Bolts.....then....I make up with re-usable fittings and install SS Braided Oil Cooler Hoses.........well....... You get the picture

Again congratulations on that beautiful car!

While you may not have an interest in NCRS or Bloomington the next owner just might.
So while you are the caretaker of this marvelous automobile, SAVE EVERYTHING!

Put the tires away. it is difficult if not impossible to find ones with the proper date coding, so they are important for YOUR CAR.

SAve the air filter if original, and anything else that you may change or replace.

I agree on Haibeck, but ditch and save the stock exhaust, and replace with a stainless form anyone, Band B, Corsa, Borla, your choice.
TheKING MUST BREATHE!!!

Very nice car, very well bought, enjoy but keep all original parts for future owners.

HAVE FUN!

Kevin,
I would keep the tires as others have said.

You can do all the fluids on a lift. Tranny is a little tricky--just make sure you remove drain before fill.

I'd say stock it will dyno around 340 rwhp. Exhaust should get +15 rwhp depending on type. Chip should get +10 rwhp. Headers should add 30 if other two are done with them in mind. I'd also relocate IAT.

Bring it to Vegas and we can do it all.

I think you mean remove the Fill Plug before the Drain Plug. Just in case you drain the transmission and then have trouble filling

Ted,
Do you have a shop? I would love to do it with someone who knows their stuff about these cars. I would have to get some tires for it first before I could go anywhere especially out to Vegas but I guess I could put it on a trailor. ST. George is my second home but if we could get something lined up after the new year Iam sure my wife wouldnt mind me taking off to Vegas for a day while she stayed in ST. George. Let me know what you think and what parts to bring with me.
Do you still have your fleet of 95s?? Kevin

Don't worry about miles. You clearly won't be driving too much per year so enjoy it. It's 20 years old. Even if it has 20,000 miles it's still, 1k per year.

I am not saying put all the miles on it. I am just saying enjoy it. And clearly you won't be daily driving it so whenever you have a chance, drive it.

4:10 gears will give you a fun "kick" for short bursts.

Port and cam it. You'll never regret it for one minute.

Kevin,
I have a lift in my garage. We can do most anything you need.

I have my '95 Haibeck 415 & '95 SGC 350 here plus my '91 HPDE car.

Glad to stop in St George and help if we're up that way...or you get in a bind.

This site is NOT going to be good for my wallet,lol....I do appreciate all the great knowledge here which is invaluable..I was looking over the Haibeck site and salivating at all the mods available.
I would like to start out with with Ted suggested and if I sold the Ferrari and go to a new Viper or Z06 I would have some extra cash to build the engine up mildly.
Iam just really torn on going into a rare low mile Z that way as Iam thinking it might turn collectors off.

With porting, cams, 63mm TB and exhaust, you can get 520+ hp. Add 4:10's and it will be one of the most fun cars you'll ever drive. My 91 had these mods and it was my favorite car. I miss it. I'd like to do these mods to my 95 but I'll wait and do it to my Z conv project instead.

And,with all of these mods
All you need do is swap back the exhaust, and then you would be ready for NCRS or Bloomington, as none of these are visible changes, except in the way the tach and speedo climb compared to the before.

Proven performance improvements without opening up the block!
Although I would vote for Mark's plenum cam cover re finish, and not worry about the over restored look as it is also over the top beautiful!

If you can take Ted up on his offer you will learn more in a day then months on your own! As far a value down the road who are you going to save it for? I would find it hard to own a car I can't drive when I want.

I'm sure one day the C4 ZR-1 will command nice $ but I'm also sure I won't be here when they do, so let the next owner play that game.
