Default Newbie starting search for a Z!

Hi Everyone,

I just started looking around this forum yesterday and there seems to be a lot of great advice and knowledgeable people on here. I just sold my '81 C3 and thinking I'd like to own a C4 Z next. Looks like the prices range from 16k ish up to 45k + for a beauty that just got posted. I'm thinking my budget is going to be about $20k. I'm leaning towards a black/black (which is nuts living in Phoenix I know!), Red/black or tan. There is white one available in Tempe right now but its not doing it for my taste. I was wondering if anyone within let's say 500 miles of Phoenix was selling or about to sell with that criteria? I need to close on my house selling before I can finalize a purchase so its going to be a month or so before I buy. Figured I'd start looking early since the car for me might take a bit to find. Thank you in advance for everyone's help and I look forward to being an active member of this forum once I get mine!!!

Sean,
Best of luck with your search!
Your budget enables you to buy a well - sorted out ZR-1.
Mileage should not be a concern, as there is not much difference between 15k miles and 75k miles.
The less owners the better.
The more documentation on maintenance performed over the years trumps most all.
Someone from this forum or the registry is usually an ideal seller, as they have followed the many suggestions discussed over the years.
These motors are good to 250k or more if maintained properly.
The rest of the car suffers the normal Corvette failure points, but those are simple inexpensive fixes.
As a former multiple C-3 owner, I can predict that you will be amazed at the improvements found in the C-4, and even more so in the ZR-1.

Don't be bashful.
Ask as many questions as you have.
Everyone here is helpful.
An advance welcome to the club!
Enjoy your search!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Marty described it perfectly........

I would say $14K to $22K is price range of almost ALL ZR1s.

Have you seen mine? It is sort of for sale and sort of not depending on my mood. There's a pretty good support group in the valley to handle these cars too.

my CL ad prob expired, but I had a post here a cpl of months ago.

Sort of.....Sort of not......

CA SMOG is a BIG Deal for some guys/gals.......If you are in a SMOG state it takes away a lot of the fun of Modifications which having an LT5 is MOST fun

I might also add.....The ZR1 is NOT a gas guzzler.....it is the opposite....up to 28 mpg on the road cruising in 6th. So that cannot be the reason for your mood swings Mike....just because gas in CA went up 45 cents last week

Thanks for the advice Marty and Dyno! Mike, your car looks pretty nice and I like the price as well. Gives me some room for mods if I choose. How much was the performance exhaust you took off? Well if its sort of for sale in a month then you sort of have a buyer lined up...

In my defense I might say that is more likely correct for most '90 and '91 cars, although that is admittedly "almost all" ZR-1s. (5,076 of 6,922 or 73%). Certain auction publications show stock 95s ranging between $31k and $43k all-in last year. --Bob

I've noticed there are more 90-91's available. I like the 93-95 a little more but not sure I want to drop $30k quite yet. I've seen a couple beauties and its tempting! I guess I'll see whats available and go from there.

I decided to lower the price and sell all the spares separately. The cost was a lot! $800-ish for the cat back, $600-ish for Z06 mufflers with NPP flapper valves and the rest of the LS7 pipe set to get the 3" catalysts, another $750 for the headers and then another $200-$300 for the guys to fit the exhaust valves and hang the pipes...oh and about another $100 to buy the parts for the vacuum valve controller and rpm switch that I made myself. I'm not even going to add it up. obviously I'd sell it for less though- whatever the market will bear. It is when I realize the effort I have into the entire car, I just start to think about keeping it for another 10 years!

The '93-'95 ZR-1s only had 448 made each year. That exclusivity is one of the things that attracted me first to my '93 and now to my '95. With normal attrition, I would guess there are probably fewer than 400 '95 ZR-1s left in the world. It took me a year of searching to finally settle on WARP TEN.

For #2 cars (stock cars better than an average driver but not a show car) Sports Car Market's latest price guide shows the '93s between $21,500 and $34,500, the '94s between #31,500 and $41,500 and '95s between $31,500 and $43,000. If you plan to do performance modifications plan on a few (or quite a few!) more $$$s. But everything depends on the car's condition, miles, history and the situation of the seller. --Bob

I'll be selling both of my 95 Zs soon. Both red/black, double Dunn head cars (REALLY late production), original, un modified (both have original windshields) Run good, Better than driver quality, 107280 and 76300 miles. $18950 (each). Age and health mean I can't really enjoy them like I would like (sold my Z06 last year). Rarest of the Zs, so excellent investment potential.

There is a slightly modified 94 with low miles that's a smokin deal for $25k. A price thats too good to pass up. The owners name is Clint out in Texas. Do a little digging and you will find his ad.

92's also very limited w 502units built. It also represents the only year of the 375hp motor WITH ASR. Transitional year.

ASR can be defeated with a switch to the left of the steering wheel near the lights on both my 93 and 95. Sorry I don't have a picture of it. When I start the car up for a drive the first thing I always do is push the button to turn it off. Unless it is raining. --Bob

I contacted Fred about his 95 double dunn head car and hoping to check out the vehicle soon since the car is local. I know Marty said there isn't much difference between 15K-75K so the rarity of the dunn head car at 76K has really peaked my interest. Hoping the timing works out or else I'll move on to the next one.

Yes you are confused. I said the 92s were the only year ZR that had the 375hp motor w ASR. Yes I can turn ASR off from the dash.

You are absolutely correct for any ZR1 92's - 95's not being in the 14K to 22K price range. I am only somewhat familiar with the 90's and 91's.....
