That ain't stock is it?
So I try to drive my two Corvettes once a week as routine maintenance to keep things from rotting and going caput. I drive them long enough to get things up to temperature and of course I enjoy owning a high performance automobile. I have a business trip coming up and know no one drives the ZR-1 while I'm out of town. My wife will drive our C3, but not the beast.... so I get home from work and ask my son if he wants to go for a ride.
So we are out tooling about chatting, and this Mustang comes out of no where and starts making a lot of noise. I'm glad we had made it down to Mexico by this time, because it's not legal in the US. My son says I think he wants to race. So being in a kind mood, I kindly downshift to 3rd and press the throttle pedal and off we go slowly pulling away from the Mustang. I guess he thought he had found a normal C4 to mess with..... ooops. Anyway he pulls up along side after we've both slowed down and rolls down his window. I roll mine down too and he inquires, "that thing isn't stock, is it?" My reply was yes it's stock. He yells, "WHATEVER" and then drives off in a huff. I and my son both started laughing pretty hard.
Okay I have a Borla exhaust and a computer tune..... It's about as stock as a ZR-1 comes. Imagine the look on his face if I had headers and porting or a stroker. He'd have soiled his self.
That's kind of the joy of owning a ZR-1. Most people just don't know what they are. The sad part is that if I had been in a really racy mood, we were going slow enough I could've grabbed 2nd gear, but I didn't see any real reason to risk having the rear end step out on me and having to pedal and correct steering since we weren't actually racing.

I agree; stealth is always good. The only thing different visually on a ZR-1 from a stock Corvette is a single emblem on the rear bumper of a '91.
Cool.
Cool.

Neat story, a lot of people have no clue, but then there are some who do!!
Also the 3rd brake light location, along with the wider license plate area, due to the wide rear bumper should be a dead give-a-way......lol

90% of the real world has no idea what the emblem on the rear is all about.

That reminds me of a time I took my Z to a nice car show in Long Island..
I happen to park next to a black 94 C-4, not on purpose, just happen to see the spot so I backed in....
The 94 was really really clean....So after a few hours I return back and start chit chatting with the owner of the 94....Good guy,has owned the car for a while now.....After about 20 or so minutes of talking he goes "How come your rear bumper is wider than mine? " I never realized the rear bumper on the ZR-1 was wider than mine" .....I paused for a moment but in my mind I'm like - is he kidding me? I explained to him that the ZR-1 had a wider rear bumper and wider rear tires than the standard C-4...
What kind of Suprised me is that he has been a vette owner for sometime now and didn't know the difference....Hey, I guess it's all good...

No thanks to GM either!
But, I kinda like the stealth role. Nuttin' like a "5-2" shift at between 45-50 mph and standing on it - all the way to 90ish mph! That has wiped the smirk off of a lot of faces!
It has been my experience that it is the very young crowd that recognizes the LT5 for what it is. They often wave their friends over to look and take pictures and ask questions about the car. Ppl my age - the late 60s-early 70s muscle-car crowd - are clueless except on rare occasion.

I've only been gone a week and I already miss the grin I get seeing her in the garage. Work trips are hard. No wife, even miss the kids, no Corvettes. Only thing it's nice to be away from are the dogs.
