Default Fuel pump/ gas tank removal

Thought I would post some pics of a horrible project. Locobob has been having issues passing emissions. He had the tank tested and sure enough it pegged HCO meter. Upon removal you could see the rust in one of the seams. Crappy GM design.

So, what was the outcome?

BTW, thanks for the pix. I haven't seen that view before. A lot of stuff is laid bare there.

Pardon my ignorance, but why would rust cause an unusual reading. I would think maybe a clogged fuel Pump. filter, or trashed f.p. but?

Jeff - explain why a rusty tank could cause emissions to increase significantly please!

Get the build sheet while you're in there.

The tank is rusted through at the rear seam. It's not bad enough to leak liquid fuel yet but it is allowing fumes to escape. The gas fumes are being picked up by the emissions testing equipment as hydrocarbons.

Already grabbed it!

The bad news is the tank is not repairable, the good news is that all C4 fuel tanks are the same so it wasn't hard to find a replacement.

Which pic shows that the best and is that seam visible without removing the tank or bumper?

I forgot to grab a pic of the seam. But it was pot marked with rust all the way along it. It's the rear most seam, you can barely see it in pic #2346. It's more than likely a combination of gas being overflowed, and water coming up under and resting on the lip.

Rob already answered the Emissisions question.

The job is easier than it looks. Book rate is 6 hours for removal and installation.

Doesn't the gas tank have a rubber bladder inside ?

I wouldn't exactly call it rubber but it has some sort of synthetic lining. This was the main reason the tank is not repairable, can't weld on it without destroying the liner. The rear seam of the tank is visible if you remove the spare tire assembly, mine was rusted through along the bottom of the seam.

Kevin: I was going to try and get your tank but I found one at a local salvage yard for not much more than what it would cost to drive up to Washington. I'm having it pressure tested, should know tomorrow if its good or not.
