I'm in the market for a c-5. Is there significant differences between the different years or is it mostly availability of different colors etc. ?

Well, you start out with the base model and then every year they add to it and improve it as they figure out the problems that show up each model year. As you get to the end of the run they will have all the problems corrected and will have all the best options. I bought a 2002 because of it. I would have bought a 2004 but I couldn't find a white one.

As with all automobiles, some small problems were fixed on earlier model years, so later years are more desirable, specifically 2002/2003/2004 by which time all design changes/fixes that were going to be done, were done.

Normal recommendation is to buy the newest, lowest mileage, most pampered example you can afford.
