I think Leno's uses a helicopter engine with a power output shaft and puts the power through the back wheel, rather than using direct thrust.

Two years ago I could have picked up two 1350 HP turboshaft engines with 2 input transmission... Lots of hours left on engines for about $8000. It can be done but fuel and thermal management are biggest problem.
