Default Can you run coolant through an oil cooler?

I'm looking for a cheap way to make a HE for a liquid to air intercooler and I can't seem to find one in the dimensions I need for cheap. Can I use a Trans or Oil Cooler?

Absolutely you can.

I believe Vortech used to do this.

So would there be any drawbacks to doing this as opposed to buying a Heat Exchanger? The difference in price is like 400.00.

Just put it where there is plenty of air flow - Like in the front of the Vette, I'd do the Front License Plate Mod and let it blow through it there, that would really keep it cooled down you also could look into one that has larger fittings like 1/2"

Thanks,Matt

i am not 100% sure but i would guess the heat exchangers prob do a little better at cooling but that sounds like it should work fine if your going for cheap

Well remember, the heat exchanger is so much more money because of the size..
If you get too small of an oil cooler, your IAT's will skyrocket. You want to make sure you balance the H/E with the powerr you are making.

What size are you looking for? Most H/E's run 200-300 bucks.

I need something with an overall height of 5", a max width of 3", and max length of 27". I can't seem to find anything in this size, so my theory was use two oil coolers that fit close to these specs in series.

Thoughts?

Use a small car radiator etc. Bigger is better though.

An oil cooler would usually be more expensive, as it needs to withstand high pressures.

Try a Ford Cobra "Stock" heat exchanger. Its nearly identicle to your specs. Other than it is about 1.5" thick. They can be had for really cheap.

Absolutely you can.
I did it on my C-5 Maggie car and really dropped my IAT's and coolant temperatures. I used a Derale with a fan attached. It is located right behing the brake cooling inlet on the right side, below the headlight. I also sell this as part of the Maggie Cool-down Kit on our Website racespecialtydesigns.com

I appreciate all of the info. You have no idea how long I searched, and finally have an answer.

I'll let you know what the new IATs are.
