Belt tensioner / choosing the right belt

Belt tensioner / choosing the right belt
I've seen a couple of Maggie tensioners broken when the belt length is choosen so that the tensioner rests at it's middle of travel (ECS tensioner).
Now as I'm installing that same tensioner to my car the first time, I see I have a belt that I can barely get on when the tensioner is fully pressed. So if there would be any forces for the tensioner to go more inwards, it will snap. To the 'loose side' it has more than enough travel of course.
What is the correct way to use tensioners travel? How should it be located while engine not running?
