TH400 vs 4L80E vs Powerglide
With the new power level I will be at, the build 4L60E I have now will definitely not survive the season coming up here. I am starting to look at other transmission options. I would like to get people's feedback on the following transmissions that actually have them installed and running. Here is what I have researched so far:
At this point I want to keep the IRS since the car is not back halved yet...... yet
The car is basically about 90% track dedicated, but I do run it around town from time to time so I would like a 'litttle' street manners.
- 4L80E - Has overdrive which is a super nice option. Can be built to have 1000+ rwhp. Requires a lot of cutting to fit.... downside.
- TH400 - Three gears and can be built to handle 1000+ rwhp.
- Powerglide - Can be built to handle any rwhp thrown at it. Downside two gears.

I'd go for the TH400.. My engine builder has one in his race car which makes 12xx on 18psi.. With that and his 3.23 gears, he can still street it when needed and on his shake down runs up here he is in the 9.0x range at almost 160..
It was built by a shop up here in Ft Collins who has done several of mine and has a great reputation for well built transmissions..
PM me if you want contact info, Keith..

The 4L80 conversion will exceed the cost of the car.
The fastest IRS Vettes are running T400s.
Can't argue with the Glide either for the 8 second cars.

The power glide is the only one out of those choices that does not need body modifactions to fit it, so going back and forth from say a six speed to a glide is very easy and something we have done for customers more then once since it's a day job to swap.
IE, street cars 9 months a year, track car for the best 3 months of the year.
Best of both worlds.

I like the glide for alot of track time. If you are going to use
your vette on the street why not build what you got. There
are several good performance tranny builders-Performa, RPM,
Finish Line , they can build to what ever hp you have or dream
of having. Explore all of your options.
