Default Moving the steering rack...

With the popularity of going straight to a 10 rib drive on these cars picking up steam I thought I would post a couple photos of what it takes to move your steering rack forward to clear the bigger balancer. I spent 2 hours today making brackets and spacers to do this on my friends car for his soon to be delivered ecs 10 rib bracket.

Basically it entails cutting off the forward mounting ears from the cradle and bolting replacement ears to it. This allows you to move the rack forward .330" for the needed clearance.

Nice pics. What kind of effect does this have on the toe adjustment? Im assuming it will pull the fronts in just a little?

It will need a new wheel alignment, the bump steer will be ok since the pivot points stayed the same.

Nice job Breecher

Arun and Bret said it needed to be moved, so I moved it... I bet it would fit without moving it, but it would be a little close for comfort, not to mention making a belt change probably nearly impossible.

How much easier is it to move the steering rack out of the way to, for example, remove the crank pulley? Sliding the steering rack back into place is one of the most dreaded things I have to do on a C5. It seems like being able to just bolt it up would be so much easier.

A little easier. Still a decent amount of work. Still have electrical and fluid connections to deal with.

You will love the idea of a direct drive when your power steering bracket fails from stress and takes out wiring and eveything in it's way when it breaks. It's ugly when it happens!

I've used Arun's brackets, they passed Jay's fabrication standards.

Passing Jay's standards is no easy task.

The wall thickness of the frame is not thick enough to depend on, I did not measure but it's less than .250". Although I did tap the holes initially there is nylock nuts on the back side.

Kit includes .330" spacers, hardware, and brackets. I only made 4 sets of these as it's not Somthing I was planning to "sell" but I figured I would make a couple extra Incase anyone needed them. Arun makes has a great product, I don't wish to steal his business from anyone and it's his photos that allowed me to create my own kit with my own spin on it.

I agree. I might do this just to make it easier to work on.... and relocate the brake control module too.
