Default What is a direct drive 8 rib balancer?

Looking..learning about superchargers.
My stock balancer looks pretty sad. No wobble yet but it will be replaced. What is a direct drive 8 rib balancer? Why would I use one?
I am looking at ECS SC1500 with possibly a small blower cam. Stock LS1 lower end and heads.

No such thing, direct drive is just the routing of the belt by a direct drive kit.

8 rib balancer is just a 8 rib balancer

8 rib balancer allows you to run a 8rib wider belt instead of a stock 6 rib belt, Its stronger and less slip!

direct drive is a separate belt for the supercharger, Its a kit that lets you run 2 belts 1 for accessory's and the other just the supercharger.

So a 8 rib belt can only work with a flip drive?

No, you can change all your pulleys to 8 rib & run 8 rib belt.

After that fails, flip drive is next, or go straight to flip (direct) drive.

The problem with going from a stock 6 rib to all 8 rib or larger instead of going from stock to 6 rib And flip drivr or 8 rib and flip drive or 10 rib and flip drive is that it ends up costing more money than adding a flip drive first. Reason being is that all flip drives are 6 rib.

Honestly most people that have stock belt drive systems can get away with nothing more than switching to a flip drive and nothing more. Itsalso cheaper by 3 to 400 bucks than a 8 or 10 rib combo.

Food for thought as well is that a new 10 rib combo is about the same price as an 8 rib combo.

Obviously there does come a point where both a flip drive and 8 or 10 rib setup become needed or beneficial.

There's also the option of a cog drive as well.

Devils advocate:

So many people are running flip drive now, you can switch to 8 rib for very cheap because you can buy their old alternator and PS pullies they have sitting around for basically nothing.

To go 8 rib, regardless of if you are including flip/direct drive or not, you still have to get: new pullies and spacers for your A&A bracket (Assuming you are using one), new supercharger pulley, and an 8 rib overdrive balancer.

The two fastest stock bottom end cars run an eight rib drive, no flip drive for charging purposes. Just some food for thought.

Agree with Doug 100% on this one. Don't like the idea of dropping voltage up top at all

It's unfortunate that ultimate performance can not always be linked to 1/4 mile ET's.

With that said isn't it the folks at ECS who offer a 6 rib belt conversion for the guys who do want to run a flip drive? Also isn't there another vendor on here who offers an alternator that is upto the task of maintaining proper voltage?

It's only money but try to soend it once.

Is there a charging problem when using a flip drive?

How do you handle the AC compressor with a 8 or 10 rib?

Also interested in learning more about the options.

Is there a particular brand of brackets that offer a superior amount of wrap on the blower (specifically an F1R)

So those two questions:

1) Who makes the best flip drive?

2) What's the recommended alternator when running a flip drive?

Only flip drive avail right now is Cartek. They hold the patent and all others selling these can no longer sell. I have a Dallas performance direct drive and have no charging issues. I'm also 8 rib and have zero belt slip.

I've been running a dallas performance for over a year with no belt slip and no charging issues. Never seen or used a cartek, but the DP is very well designed.
