Default What is feeding the PS tank siphon? I looked..

Haven't seen anyone post this before. If it has been, then I guess it's been posted twice now .

I've had a pretty good break from my junk, but I got rid of my bridge line across the tanks and put the siphon pump back in the PS tank so that I didn't have to drain or open a fuel line every time I drop the driveline .

At first, I tried to keep the factory line on one of the pumps since it has the Y-fitting in line to feed the PS "pump". I fought with it for a while, and couldn't get my lines to run the way I wanted. Sooooo I decided to cut it up in frustration and see if it was just an orifice or what. Turns out, that's all it is. There is a tiny hole allowing a very small pressure leak to feed the siphon. Mine actually had a crack to one side of the hole, so it's effective area was larger (though I never had issues when running factory pump a long time ago). I have a .045" diameter tig wire I tried to pass through it and it wouldn't go, so the orifice is smaller than that. Can't tell you the exact size.

Anyway, I use a couple stainless -6an fittings and just made my own orifice. There is also a check valve in the factory line to prevent backflow when the pumps shut off, so I used an earl's check valve to do the same. Seems to have worked for me, and no issues maintaining pressure. Actually didn't need to adjust my pressure regulator at all.

Here are some photos of the orifice in the factory line, and the one I made.

If this helps answer a question for someone making their own fuel and wants to gut the factory system but keep the siphon pump, then all the better.

That's a nice weld. That ground clamp looks like a beast, I may have to buy one of those.

Here are some pictures. Excuse the wiring still hanging around. These were before I anchored the lines and pulled the wiring out of the way. You get the idea though. I welded a separate -6an to the fuel hat, so the 2 pumps don't merge until the union on the filter. No restriction merging them together into a small line. Where the stock filter and lines were, there is just my ground wires and the feed/return for the siphon.

Thanks. The clamp is a Tweco 200amp I think.

Cool, I wish I put more of my filter, tees, etc in that spot. I put it in the tunnel and I just have two relays about where yours are. I'm going to hate putting in a new fuel filter haha

I wanted to have my welding guy tig a fitting to that spot instead of using a bulkhead fitting, but we were worried about the heat messing up that electrical connectors seal.

Definitely more than I would like to have, but works fine.... merging the 2 pumps without reducing line size, fitting the big Fore filter, feeding the siphon, 2 returns, and still having enough clearance with the 28" hoosier's to make me comfortable is difficult. The pumps are also noticeably quiter with the big filter instead of the 2 small 40micron russel filters I used before. They must have been a pretty good restriction.

I'm sure there are easier ways to route, but that's not why I created the thread. It was to share information on the orifice/siphon system.
