Default Okay, my head hurts! Guys with steeper gears please step inside!

I finally found a set of 4.10s available this morning so I pulled the trigger (I picked the 4.10s over 3.90s because I have 315/30-20's R888s on the back which definitely killed some gearing). My slave cylinder took a dump on me so I was planning on installing these while the car is torn apart.

I'm currently 560 with a V3-Si with a 3.8 pulley. I have a 3.4 pulley and an Alkycontrol meth kit that will be going on in search of 650.

But now I'm torn on putting 4.10s in my car. My buddy is warning me against it because he had problems hooking 530 whp on the street with what I believe 3.90s. His car was an n/a 403 I believe. I know it's a different animal, but...

I have yet to ever take the car to the track, but I do intend to and it won't be more than a few times a year. It will spend more 99.9% of its time on the streets.

Tell me, am I being foolish (a.k.a F'n stoopid) to try this? What have your experiences been like with this kind of power with 3.90s/4.10s?

That is a tall gear for a street driven car. Prepare for more gas station stops. But when you do take it racing, it will be an asset. By track do you mean drag or circle track/road racing? Assuming you have good enough tires, they will make it very quick.

My bad, sorry I wasn't thinking about the other types of tracks. I was talking about going to the dragstrip.

Will it really kill the mileage that bad? More concerned about the freeway than city driving as far as mileage is concerned.

Well you do have an M6. I'm sure in 6th you can still get good mileage. I know in my A4 going from 2.73 to 3.42 made a noticeable difference in fuel economy. By changing the rear end ratio you are automatically increasing the RPM for every gear. So the rpm in 6th will be higher when cruising too. But maybe it won't be too bad over all for an M6.

Now drag racing is where those gears will shine. But you will need a dedicated set of drag tires to hook and make good use of them.

Not sure if you've seen this chart before. But there is a pretty big rpm difference

Some of our regular street racers have 4.10's and come home with the cash more then they don't. With a good tire it really helps get the jump on the other car, and that's with over 700 rwhp.

Hope that helps

Nuke, no I haven't seen that chart before. I was using an online calculator with the different tire sizes, but that chart is pretty sweet and my head doesn't hurt nearly as much. lol

Thanks for the info Doug! Can you tell me, what kinds of tires that they may be running? Is it mostly the dedicated drag radials? Do any of them run the R888's with any success?

I am currently installing a V3-Si on top of the heads/cam I have. I was running 4.10's with the h/c setup and my MN6. Shifting is quick and short so you need to re-calibrate your cadence. Mine was a street-only car.

I recently swapped in a Stage 4 Quiafe diff with 3.42's because I couldn't quite fathom having to contend with the 4.10's and FI with the shift speeds that I would need to maintain. Of course, I've never driven that combo before - plus, I do have the h/c as well.

The Toyo R888 are a great road course/street tire but not a dragstrip tire! Look into a MT or Hoosier.

I have 500HP to the wheels on a TT MN6 with 4:10's. Different power delivery of course. Had 3:42's. Quickness is absolutely improved but traction suffers. I need better tires now. I'm in 6th gear comfortably if just cruising by 55 mph so a lot more short shifting. All street use. I am absolutely glad I did it because the around town driving, passing, merging, entrance ramps, etc is way more fun. For me after the TT, best mod. As for gas mileage, if mostly city driving shouldn't be much of a difference. Highway should notice a bit less the faster you cruise. My gas mileage is much worse because every stop light is a 4 shift practice run if I ever do take it to the strip. I hope all this impression info helps your decision.

Maxxed out and overspun p1 here, with 390's. It's like nitrous, with better topend.

i'm about to install 4.30s

on my truck with 33s
but seriously, the shorter gearing of the M12 would probably be better all-around if you'd've got the 3.90s... which would be similar to the 1-2-3 driving feel of 4.10s in a coupe/FRC.

I just picked up the car on Monday with the 4.10s and the new clutch. I'm still semi-babying it for the break-in of the clutch. But so far I'm loving it!

I especially want to thank joshtownsend on here who answered tons of questions for me a couple of months back in a phone conversation. Without his input back then, I probably would've backed out on this idea.

With an M6 that has to be annoying? The gears in the Z are short enough but with 4.10s it's got to magnify that a ton. But if you like to row them then I guess it's not so bad.
