My 01 z06 with the a&a si is currently making 600 whp. Stock trans, diff, block,
I would eventually like to see 800+ wheel. After i start upgrading the rest of the drive train
Do I use my current block and build? Or start new?

For that power level the factory block and crank are plenty capable. Depends on if you want less down time then buy another block.

Its seems 600 is an easy task. Anything more than that and it starts to really hurt the wallet LoL

Stock crank with forged pistons and rods should do the trick in what ever block you wanna use up to about the 900rwhp range. Arp Main studs are a nice option. Top it off with LS9 Gaskets and ARP head studs.

In my searching for a basic forged set up its almost always cheaper to buy another short block and set yours aside or sell it in the long run. The machine cost and disassembly etc kinda eat up a lot and then you don't have the stock block to sell or re use if you wanted. Now if you have a really good connection at a machine shop and do lots of the labor and tear down yourself you might be better off building yours.

Aes, H squared, Thompson motorsports, etc all seem to have a good rep with good options.

Definitely over upgrade the drivetrain and be ready to spend some coin on a fuel system!

I'm in the same boat as you and think I will pull stock short block this winter for a forged 347

This can be done in your current block or you can do what most of my customers do and order a new one while selling your old one. The motors from the z06 bring big money on ebay or CL if you label it as such. We can build you a new short block good to 800HP with forged diamond pistons, Forged Scat rods, ARP rod bolts and King racing bearings for as little as $2499 with a one year warranty as long as you purchase a new oil pump with the motor. Please let us know if we can help you in any way.
Thank you,
Kyle

thanks for the info guys,
i would like to actually build it myself but all things considered it may not be a bad idea to let a reputable shop supply me with a block,
after some research im going to be spending some hard earned money on everything else that goes with such a thing,

I went with Thompson and never looked back. Trying to get a "knowledgeable" shop (some don't know LSx engines) to get everything machined and put together can be a pain, and by my calculations, were NO cheaper.

We have 2 options surrounding the 1000HP mark. Our 900HP motor is $3499 for the LM7 all forged version available in 5.3 or 5.7L and 383CI. The 1100HP rated build is $3738 available in 5.3, 5.7 and 383CI. Please let me know if I can help with anything.

We can do builds on existing components. We will check and machine as necessary. The only down side to using used components is the possibility of shipping a bad part and having some machine work in finding out it is not good. In any case we will work with you in any way possible to build your motor.

interested !! does the 383 have a forged crank?

I have a 4.8 iron block, as well as an LS6 alum block

good deal on the 1100 hp build! can you give a run down of the parts used?

what I have new is a lunati 4.0 crank and h beam rods. wondering if they would work in this build to save a few bucks.

The 383 will include the following:
GM L33/LM7(Depends on Iron or Aluminum option) Blueprinted core block
king racing main bearings HP
King racing rod bearings HP
Thompson Motorsports single piece racing cam bearings
TMS 4340 forged crankshaft with reluctor 3.622" or 4.000" (4.000 for 383)
Thompson Motorsports 4340 forged H-beam connecting rods with ARP rod bolts
Diamond racing pistons flat top -2cc or -10cc
Performance ring set coated steel top napier 2nd file fit
12 month unlimited mileage warranty with the purchase of a new Melling HP oil pump from TMS for only $129.99
This short block is rated to 900HP (1100HP with ARP main stud upgrade)

We can use customer supplied components but when used or customer supplied parts are used there is no one year warranty as we can not guarantee used or supplied non TMS components.

The Thompson Motorsports crankshaft is 4340 forged, Angle weight reduction drilled, Gun Barrel drilled and dual key ways are pre cut. It is a 1500HP rated crankshaft with the block being the limiting factor in this particular build at 1100 with ARP main studs installed.

There is a lot of information here so if you have any questions please feel free to ask. You can also call us any time at 972-853-2450. We are open 10-6 M-F CST and close from 12-1 for lunch.

Any current options for a forged stock stroke crank? I know the stock one would surpass my power goals easy but having the keyways etc is really nice. Do you cut keyways into the stock cranks by chance?

My stock one pinned hasnt been an issue just curious.

We offer the same motor with our TMS stock stroke 4340 forged crankshaft at the same price. It will have the dual key ways pre cut.
We do not offer cut stock crankshafts, The snout is the weak point on the crank. We would rather use a 4340 crank if a key way is needed than risk a failure due to a crankshaft snout.
