Default Junkyard 5.3 build

Picked up an aluminum 5.3 pullout from a wrecked buick rainier for $800. Plan is too swap in an ls6 cam and put my 243 heads on this with studs and ls9 headgaskets. The shortblock will remain untouched other than the cam. I'll probably push 650whp with it, 700 when I switch to corn.

I chose the aluminum 5.3 since it has some thick sleeves, and I didn't want to switch to an Iron block. With the setup i'm planning it will have about 9.2:1 compression unless I mill the heads. Still haven't made a decision on that. I'm hoping losing 21ci and 1.3 static won't make it too much of dog out of boost.

The reason I'm doing this is so I don't hurt my low miles ls6, it has some value in it and it would be a shame to lose that. All in all when I sell off all the accesories and everything else I have laying around the garage including the LS6 shortblock, this motor will be paid for and so will a new tire setup. If I'm lucky a linelock too.

I have to finish a math class this week and next, then I'll start posting pics as I start putting things together.

You'll probably see it before most will. Matt hooked me up on the LS6 cam. I forgot to MSG him that I got it on thursday.

I'm hoping so. I originally wanted an L33 because of the stronger rods and flattop pistons, but they're stupid hard to find for a reasonable price.

No, I actually put some aluminum reflective tap on the outside of the plastic battery shield, it's keeping the heat out nicely.

Twin turbo, similar to a TTix kit or APS just garage built.

Jimbo, if you decide to sell the LS6 motor, let me know. Thanks.

Good luck on the new build. I doubt you notice any loss of power from less cubes... You will lose some from the lower compression but.. Couple extra lbs of boost will make up for it.

Thanks,
Before I pull it i'm gonna do a compression check and leak down test. If all is within spec i'll be posting the shortblock for sale. If not i'll keep it and build a forged 347 later. Right now I'm DDing it without issues and it runs great so i'm assuming it's good.

Me too, I also like to push the limits of these stock rotating assemblies. My last LS1 I started modding and racing at 117k miles, put at least 200 passes on the car and then sold it, It still runs strong to this day.

I'm at 150K on mine, lol. Probably 10-12K with the supercharger (ECS) Haven't gone too crazy with it yet though

I think I'd either do what you're doing or go as simple as possible with a rebuild. just rods/pistons/bearings.. stock everything else

I don't think so, should weigh the same as my LS6.

04 and 03 are, has 24x crank and 1x cam on the back. Knock sensors in the valley etc. Or at least I haven't found a conflict yet. I'll post up anything I find. I think the only thing I have to do if buy some 04+ headstuds and sell my earlier ones.

Are you sure it's a small rod engine? Might be able to find some cheap gen 4 guts for it. Quick turd hone and regap the rings then run it. I'd hate to see a small rod take out the nice block but I do understand its a running engine and easy to just drop it in.

Based on everything i've found yes. Same rods as the ls1/ ls6/ lq4. Same crank just balanced for the smaller bore pistons. Eventually I'll build a forged 326 or 347. Until then, this will have to do.
