Default Crankcase venting

It seems like most people just like to use two big valve cover vents and change their oil more frequently, which is currently how mine is set up.

Has anyone ever tried to use a ram air PCV type system? Im thinking a scoop in the front where the mesh is, a small air filter, a check valve and then a hose to one valve cover. Then a breather on the other one.

This way when cruising I'm hopefully getting some fresh air pushing through the block.

If you haven't tried it, do you think it will work?

I run the PCV with a one way check valve. It draws air at part throttle and seals shut under boost.

Do you get much oil in your intake? That was my concern when I set the car up. Apparently the oil can promote detonation or something like that.

No because I also put a catch can in the PCV line. Here's a pic:

Based on that pic, I would say most of your venting is to atmosphere through the oil fill vent

Speaking of that, I found this interesting piece

Chris,

Did you vent or modify the drivers side of the system?

In that pic, the breather cap is for letting blowby out under boost. The PCV/catch can draws metered crankcase air under vacuum and filters it.

That is a cool adapter, like the Metco. I went away from the breather cap and did a Moroso breather tank to vent and contain the blowby. It started getting messy above 17psi boost. Here's how I run it now.

No my driver side is closed off with factory plug. This setup has worked good for me for quite a while.

I run pcv just like Chris does but use a -10 line on each valve cover to a vented tank. The more vent you have under boost the better. People like to run the lines to the intake but it will make a oily mess of your piping and intercooler.

I just run 2x -10 vents to catch can, to atmosphere.

That's how mine is setup now. I really don't want to spend money on a vacuum pump, plus they aren't really practical for street applications since they will have to be rebuilt often.

The only issue I see with our current setups, is that we aren't getting any fresh air moving through the block. We are just venting our blowby so we don't blow a seal. Our oil is getting contaminated rather quickly though (or at least I've been told)

I was thinking that I could use a scoop and an air filter, and keep a steady flow of fresh air moving through the block. I guess I can just give it a shot and see how it works.

Add the PCV like I said above and how Chris's picture shows. Under vacuum you pull air from the valley or valve cover depending on year, pass it through the sealed type catch can to the intake. Make up air will inter the engine through the valve cover vent/s, but under boost or no vac. you will just expel blowby through the vents. It does allow a tiny bit of unmetered air in on MAF tunes, but I never had any issues. I run a SD tune now so it doesn't matter.
