Ring Lands and Turbos
Can someone explain what ring lands are and there purpose? How are they dammaged in a turbo situation? What are the symptoms of a damaged ring land
Thanks for the info

This is my extremely simply explanation.

The pistons are hypereutectic. With that being the case, it makes them harder, but more brittle. Any detonation and you'll be risking popping the top off the piston too. I see this more often than any other failure in F/I LS engines.

the hyper pistons are strong but won't take much in the way of detonation.
to minimize emissions, the top ring land is higher on the piston which makes the top of the piston crown thinner. a good forged FI piston has the ring lands a bit further down on the piston to provide a stronger and thicker piston top and the forging is a bit more forgiving to detonation.
with a stock piston tune for ZERO detonation and keep an eye on it.
the factory piston will develop stress cracks and eventually break off from the top of the piston to the upper ring land.
ouuuuuchhhhh!
