Any drive train concerns after adding A&A supercharger
Folks,
Those of you that have FI, in your opinion are there other areas that need to be improved/upgraded for the supercharger addition (ie half shafts, transmission, etc)?
I have an A4 01 coupe with headers, intake, dyno tune. Upgraded to power slot rotors and Hawk brake pads.
Thanks,
Dave

I had some wheelhop after having the A&A kit installed on my M6.
I added an ECS trans brace which solved it.
I also added a Hoosier rear end mount as a preventative measure.

how much power are you making?... my stock clutch completely let go around 6-8psi (5k rpm) on my old setup which I'm guessing was around 600rwhp
#6
Was dynoed 540 when installed and tuned with a 3.6" pulley and shorties before the longtubes.
I don't dump the clutch and it hasn't started slipping in the higher rpms.
I do get some loss of clutch pedal reserve WOTing the car but it's only momentary and not enough to make me want to spend 3k putting in a Mantic or something.
Next year....

All depends how much power you have and how you drive....
There are plenty of clutches that hold good power for reasonable cost. ACT Single Disk and Mcleod RXT have both held strong for me. I only got rid of the ACT because I was forging the motor for more power and decided to step up to the twin disk RXT. The ACT held 606/531 easy.
OP,
I would suggest you limit the drivetrain hop and flex. Use Hinson motor mounts and hoosier or Hinson Dif mounts as well as a Hoosier or ECS Trans/Dif brace. Next step would be the internals of the trans and diff. What type of power do you make or looking to make and how do you drive? Mostly street? Track? etc?
Your half shafts are pretty strong if they are OEM GM. IMO as you build keep them as the "weak link" because its much cheaper to replace them than just about anything else.

Half the cost is the installation unless you do it yourself.
How's the pedal stiffness.
I don't want anything harder than stock when the time comes to replace it.
I had a Tick master for a while and totally hated it.

ACT single was stiffer than stock no doubt but not terrible with stock master. Based off my experiences with my LS cars and others if you want stock like pedal you can use LS7 ( wouldnt recommend much more than 600hp with it) or the RST/RXT twin disk options.
I have only used OEM masters on the Vette. I have a Tilton on my 04 GTO however it is smaller than the standard offering bore from tick which makes it a bit easier.
My current OEM master, OEM slave, and RXT combo feels about 20% stiffer than stock but it feels better than stock in my opinion. Fantastic for a clutch rated at 1,000 hp
I did the install on jackstands with the write up on the forum the first time around with ACT. The second time the motor was out of the car so I bolted it on before dropping it back down =)

Setup should make 520 rwhp. I am interested in 1/2 mile or 1 mile events (straight line). Run a couple per year.
Thanks for your input, i will look into diff and motor mounts.

If your experience is anything like mine...just about everything.
To be fair I do drive like a moron though.
So far on the upgrade list.
Twin disc clutch
Rebuilt torque tube with DSS couplers
Rebuilt T56 with all the upgrayedds (after I broke my first stock Z06 trans at the track)
New Z06 rear diff with C6Z06 guts
Rebuilt another Z06 diff with C6 Z06 guts after blowing up my first one.
Pfadt trans brace
ECS trans brace
Drivers side axle
Think thats it for the past 2 years. Hope you have better luck.

Unless I read your post wrong you have an A4 ? Not sure why everyone is talking about clutches? My trans A4 outlasted the motor, but I ended up blowing both, the power of the supercharger is addictive and it was hard for me to keep my right foot anywhere but to the floor! I let the wheels spin (no traction) and I had no wheel hop I'm sure that helped my trans outlast motor. I drive the car hard, it's a toy to me, a very expensive toy! I was not conservative when driving.... if I was I'm sure both trans and motor would have been ok much longer. The A4 is usually the weak link.. it just wasn't in my case.
Good luck

+1 for the RST .... I've got one and it feels light as a feather (to me) for all the force it can hold

I'm after a year of deliberation thinking of going same route as the OP with my 99 Auto too..
was considering C6, but I still love the C5 look more!
I'm in the UK do we have less options for people to work on them, but think I have found someone who works on LS Gearboxes..
I was considering just bolt on the SC and go.. but I think thats going to be a bad idea.. you may be lucky.. but few stories over here on that being very Rare..
so beefing up the trans I think is in order.. also is it worth going to 3.42 at the same time while its out and apart?

I'd say, install a transmission cooler when you install the SuperCharger, and then just don't worry about it. If it's installed right, and tuned right (like A&A will); you'll most likely get many thousands of miles, and years of enjoyment out of your SC C5.
If you go 'to the track' often; then things might break. That is the nature of racing; wether you have a SuperCharger or not. I"m sure you understand that.
Building a car for the track, is a little different from building a super running street car. A&A, Andy and Josh, can advise you on that, depending on where you want to go, with your C5.
But for a really strong street car, with around 500 RWHP; don't worry about it. you'll love it!!! And there are many guys runnning much more than 500, and all else stock, with no problems. But.....you can break things, with a totally stock car, too.
