Default shifting

This sounds like a newbe question but what the heck .
How are you A4 guys with high hp doing top speed runs? I've read many times that you cant go into OD at WOT (with high hp) so how do you make the transition from 3rd to 4th???
I always start shift into "D" for any full throttle run, whether from a stop or 60mph, and let off close to the top of 3rd gear (around 130) when playing. But with the addition of all of the higher hp cars appearing around here, I need to wind it on up
I have a RPM stage VI

If im going to exceed the mph limit of 3rd gear, I leave it in OD. Ive gone 170mph in the half mile with no shifting issues. Ive also been 190mph on a private course in OD with no issues.
If you have a good trans builder youll be fine.

Thanks C5N
RPM built the trans, and they were actually one of the ones that said to put it in 3rd before a WOT run.
Its good to hear you're having no issues

Well; I just got a email back from RPM saying I should NEVER shift to OD under WOT.

1st-4th gear in the half mile. Started and ended with the shifter in 4th or OD

I wonder if it matters that you are running a 4l65 instead of a 4L60?

I just don't understand how these "stock" factory auto cars with 500-700 hp are running all the way through the gears

The rep responded again and was VERY clear that OD was not designed to hold a heavy load

Frustrating

They're the same trans internally. Every C5 auto is a 4L65E. That's simply the trans axle case for our cars.

I'd look for a shop that can build you a 4L60/65E that can handle wot in 4th gear. I've put mine through all kinds of abuse and countless wot's deep into 4th gear. After 6 yrs we freshened it up and put in the Sonnax Smart Input Drum which wasn't available when we first built the trans. That drum really helps hold power in 3rd and 4th.
Do they just expect you to let off at the top of 3rd gear? Lol. You'd have a lower top speed then a stock car.

But you're probably not crossing the finish line in OD unless you got a really high trap speed. We're talking about actually continuing to stay wot in OD or 4th gear.

That's exactly what I asked him.
There are stock 500-700 hp., Vettes, Camaro, mustangs, challengers, that put it in OD and run it with their foot to the floor until they hit redline, but my STAGE VI built trans can't.... He said with my 3:42, I could run it up to around 150, but OD was never intended to hold that kind of a load.
I don't have many places that I can run one to 170+, but as you know, with the power we have, it can get to 130-140 in a few seconds.
There's a guy with a Mustang 500 talking smack about his top speed right now, and I hate to thank his "stock car" can outrun my MODDED car because I cant use OD.
