Great work with the heat shielding! Ready to hear this thing!

Heat shielding looks great but do you think it may hold ALOT of heat in especially with an iron block?

That is a very good question and frankly I don't have an answer. I think no matter what these front mount turbo systems generate a ton of heat and I am more concerned about reflecting the heat from the turbo then I am dissipating heat from the block. Since the DEI shield will reflect the majority of that turbo heat I think the engine will be fine considering the cooling system for both coolant and oil but only time will tell. My biggest concern was making sure that no wiring was going to get melted. So far my process for that was relocating some of the sensors, making all new harnesses out of GXL wiring and protecting them with two layers of heat shielding to include a fiberglass braid and DEI silicone fire sleeve .

It's looking quite nice, good to take your time.

I was a little concerned with the picture showing the lines at the back left side of the engine coming out from under the heat shielding; looks like they may chafe. Of course, routing after the install may change all that.

Very "san-o" installation

My guess (for what it's worth) is the turbo is going to create a lot more localized heat than the block with its internal cooling system. Better to protect from that turbo heat than whatever the block comes up with.

i hope thats the case for him but i really don't think its going to work like that.
there is a reason iron block c5's have issues cooling, now take into account that he is covering the engine and its not going to allow anything to escape and no air flow what so ever.
i say give it a go and see how it does, worst case you remove it and reroute the wires so they don't touch the hot side of the turbo's. radiant heat isn't that much of an issue, its more anything that can contact the turbo WILL melt.
one thing i do recommend is putting some of that heat shield on the actual frame of the car where your feet will be, that is the only thing i wish i did when the engine was out last time. i have some of that gold reflective stuff there but it can only do so much.

Ive ran a Iron block north of 1000hp for the last 5 years and ive never had any cooling issues in any way shape or form even with the A/C running in the heat of the summer or on the road course pounding the hell out of it for 30mins at a time. So im unsure of the iron block cooling issues you reference. Ive only seen oil temps cap 300 degrees once and never has the engine overheated.

I think(think) that you should be fine with the heat shield. You made a great choice in materials chosen....as that, is pretty much the only thing that will really deflect. We see that same thing in production car high heat areas, as well as aerospace stuff we have in the shop. It MIGHT...make the engine a hair warmer maybe...but probably not as bad as what the turbos would be doing at full spool and 1100plus degrees.

JD, did you build the exhaust manifolds? I know you built a set for Brett and I think a set for your car. You mentioned in another thread they may go to production. Did I miss something somewhere?

What about a set for the C6?

The first prototype for this kit came from my garage. I'm the "JDS designed" in Jon's kit details on HSP site. I am not building the production kits for Huron though, no. Jon and his team at HSP have worked very hard to get this to a production level, and added further detail with the custom mounts/compressor outlet couplers/3" straight pipes.

This kit is different then what I did on my car and for Bret's. I don't want to clutter up his thread too much with other builds, but suffice to say there are many other aspects of what's on mine and Bret's that are more custom oriented than what could be done on an as is sold, bolt in kit.

Not much to update at the moment. Spent the weekend working on a different turbo project that ended up having some issues. The engine is ready to get dropped into the car now though. Made all new wiring harnesses for the engine sensors and shielded them the best I could from heat, don't want any issues down the road and figure it was time well spent.

TT, quick question, do you have a top down shot with the hotside on the engine stand?

How much clearance do you have between the downpipe/gate pipe and the pan? I have a drysump pickup in that location so just want to check to see if I may have interference.

Well since the turd still isn't in the car I was able take some pictures for you.. Ran into a a/c compressor issue that I'm trying to resolve. Aside from that it's ready to go in.

You could just build a nice coffee table for your living room, place that piston-driven automotive artwork on top of it, and consider it done.

It's like good art; makes me drool...

Updates:
Underside is completely buttoned up and exhaust is on.
Just need to finish up some wiring and under hood assembly.
