Default How hot is too hot?

Just wondering how hot your oil temps and coolant temperatures get having a big intercooler blocking the radiator? What is the max temperatures I should see?

Sounds like you're in a similar situation as I am. Do you have pictures of your intercooler/condenser/radiator stack is setup? Your setup is close to mine. Small cube forged engine, F1R, and aftermarket radiator. I also have dual SPAL fans. Considering swapping to a single SPAL 'Extreme' 19" fan just to try things if my latest project doesn't fix my cooling issues.

I haven't driven my car in about a month, but I was having issues getting hot. Anything over 235* coolant temp made me nervous. This was in near 100* ambient temps.

I got fed up, cut up the front bumper crossmember to move the intercooler 6" forward and am in the process of welding up some new intercooler piping and giving that a try.

I wonder if the Tigershark front bumper (or others with better front-breathing) is the answer to our troubles. I'm trying everything to keep the stock bumper though.

Ive got a large intercooler blocking 80% of the air going through my radiator. Those 2 mods helped me reduce my engine temp by around 20*. I've got a front mount turbo that creates a ridiculous amount of heat under the hood. I also fabricated an air deflector under the car and that brings fresh air to the front of the radiator so it gets pulled through . I've got dual spal fans pull lots of air through the radiator. On a 90* day it runs at bottom 200's, around 205*. On an 80* day or night it runs around 185*.

I'm running E85 as well..

Where did you get that hood vent?
Plastic?
Does it let much rain in on the engine?

The vent is made by Trackspec. It's metal and I've only got caught in the rain once and I didn't have any ill effects. I carry a bath towel and put it on the intake to absorb the rain .

I have a stock rad with ECS intercooler and a Earls 13 row oil cooler.
In 90* weather I usually see 187-190 coolant and 200 oil and that's in stop and go traffic. On the hwy it drops about 8-10* for both coolant and oil. This data is without the AC on and 5w-30 oil.

For a trial, I went ahead and cut out the licence plate area (just a smaller hole because I live in a state where a front plate is required so I left enough to still mount a plate). This has dropped my highway temps about 10-12 degrees. Still, I think coolant temps of 208 is too high (82 degrees outside). The intercooler and radiator are clean.

I wonder if the Tigershark front bumper
I've been thinking about this myself.

I don't think 208* is to bad. I was previously concerned with my coolant temps at 220* when I first got into LS based motors. I read that it's not uncommon for LS motored cars to run 220* -225* normally, which is completely unacceptable to me coming from the mustang world.

Front plates are required in Illinois as well, but I'll risk the ticket.

Today was 100* and I drove for about 20 miles on surface streets. Coolant was 214 and oil was 232. I have a ECP rad and DRM oil cooler. I also added Trackspec vents to the hood recently.

Running the AC is the true test...especially in traffic..

I have tried every cooling trick in the book on my car aside from cutting the front frame cross bar out and moving the intercooler into the nose of the car, and the only thing that has made a NOTICEABLE improvement is the 12" Spal EXTREME fans.. They lowered my temps about 12-15* on average, everywhere.. Even at freeway speeds. You need to have a KILLER alternator and wiring to run them though.. They pull almost double the amps of the regular 12" Spal fans.

This is my newest attempt at rectifying this issue. Unfortunately, my daily driver just kamakazi'd 7 valves, so that has taken priority so it will be a while til I get around to making new intercooler piping and trying it out. We are already out of 100* ambient temps for the year so that may be a factor as well.

I went from less than 1" between intercooler and condenser to 6"+. I could have went further forward if I wanted to put a sharp 90 (or dropped it down closer to the ground) on the outlet of the intercooler but chose not to.
