Default "Best Turbo for a stock C5"

A friend of mine just bought a beautiful stock 2001 convertable. We were into the 5.0s years back, and he's built a 9 sec turbo foxbody, we're both quite learned on turbos.
He would like a mild, driveable setup (it's a 6 spd manual too)
I know about fuel pump, injectors, HP tuners, valvesprings, etc.
he'd like to use the stock cam too. Can you guys suggest a quick spooling, pump gas power limited turbo ? looking at a T4, single turbo
I'm thinking around 500 RWHP and 10 PSI ?
Is the stock cam OK for this too?
any other input ?
Thanks.

I wouldn't waste my time or money trying to make only 500 RWHP with a turbo build. That's a hp build goal ... I'd say just about any 70mm or 76mm unit will support that power. I had a cheap master power MP T70 with an .96 ex housing make 565 RWHP rear mounted. Spooled quickly on the street and ran mid 11's with a terrible 2.0 60 foot in an automatic vert.

The exact same turbo went 9's in my old mustang coupe with a bumper dragging 1.28 60 foot on full tilt.

Thanks. More concerned about driveability, quick spool...stock H/C/I, pump gas, good clutch... looks like 550-600RWHP at about 10PSI, awesome

Drivability will be like stock. It doesn't take much cam to make power. My 1000 RWHP turbo mustang had a .565 lift cam. I've driven my rearmount corvette from 10pm until 4am hitting 1/2 a dozen street racing spots one night without a hiccup. I would even drive it to work on sunny summer days. Until you hit the go pedal hard, it acts like a stock corvette .

He would like to keep the stock cam for fuel mileage...

I'm know there's stock cam builds around here. Hopefully they'll share their results.. I'm certain a mild turbo and stock cam will get your buddy where he wants to be. From what I recall that cam has a turbo friendly lobe separation.

Wow, having come from pushrod-302's, I'm frickin amazed how easily these LS engines make power (and don't blow HGs or crack/split blocks easily either lol)

Frontmount....are there any distinct advantages/disadvantages to a front or rear mount besides the obvious heat etc. ?

Stock block (302) to stock block (ls) you've gotta go LS all day. My stock block 302 motor ran high 9's in a foxbody. I seen a stock 6.0 block in a foxbody run high 8's and these days they're faster. I love my pushrod Ford R Block though. When I put my race car back together, my ford R block motor will run high 7's. Until then, I've got a 4 year old I'm supposed to be setting a good example. Lol.

Yeah, we're 5.0 Mustang money guys who can now afford a sub-20K C5. Even back in the day, R-blocks cost too much, we both went with F4TE (I think) rollers 351Ws, he ran 357ci and I was going 393W stroker.

I'd imagine spool time would be a little better with the front mount with the same turbos. I couldn't tell you exactly being that I've had 5 turbos on my car between the rear and front mount combos. I can tell you that the heat generated under the hood is tremendous. I didn't particularly like depending on a scavenge pump for the oil return on my rear mount combo with a fresh forged motor

It'll probably - definitely be a front mount with lots of "ugly" heat wrapping (function over form...we are mustang guys after all lol)

You could probably go 8.50's with a 1/2 filled stock 351W block. I would definitely try to but I fell into a fully machined R block 347 for about $1200 probably 8 years ago. I still have it. I Hydrolocked a cylinder a few years ago and haven't fixed it. I've been having to much fun with the corvette

from what I've read, guys recommend spraying meth to keep temps down, detonation at bay and stock ring gaps from butting....any experience/knowledge with this ?

He ran mid 9s with his TT 351, sold it and bought the C5.

I see 94 octane & a meth kit in his future. Everyone seems to prefer the ECS meth kit but I had good luck with the devils own dual meth kit.
