Default 99 FRC LS3 A&A Questions

Hi guys,

I'm going to be installing and tuning an A&A kit on a friends (and now customer) car.

The LS3 is a GM crate engine I believe and had a blower friendly cam installed at the time of the swap.

Goal is 6-8 psi. Just a street car, not likely to be raced often.

How is the LS3 for boost? pistons ok? IE, not fragile?
The customer is buying the kit. Anything special he needs to ask A&A given it's an LS3?

I know my way around C5's very well as I also own one.
I've tuned many a Mopar with turbos, roots and Centri blowers, so I'm quite comfortable with the tuning end of it.
If it looks to have KR, I'll suggest a good water meth kit. We find them very useful on the Dodges.

A couple of you guys here know me, well at least through the various forums.

Thanks

Ron

Yeah, you (forum name) sound familiar.

Now, which TB? LS3?

If so, you need to tune it AND not just for the airflow.

I'll have to find out. I haven't seen the car yet.

I assume you are referring to the issues with the gold blade LS3 TB. I've read some on that in the past.
I certainly hope the shop that installed the engine put the LS2 TB on there. Even if they are now getting expensive.

I'm not even sure if the car is running the stock PCM with some sort of 24x to 58x converter box.

All stuff I'd like to know before I tackle this.

You know how to creep up on the tune. I've been told by one of the most respected block guys in the industry that the LS3 sleeves aren't as strong. Keep it from detonating and it'll be fine.

Make sure you'll get the base tune for the car.

That's a good reference for basic things like injector control (plenty of values there) and of course some parameters under engine diagnostics (for example Calc airmass, MAF cyl airmass), which need to be modified since the engine will flow much more air than stock one.

Are you going to tune it with 2 bar MAP / Speed Density?

If not, MAF will be maxed out fairly quickly...

Furthermore, you'll need to adjust (or at least verify) knock sensor sensitivity, since they will be in a different location than the stock ones.

You're going to use LS1 knock sensors, right?

You guessed right; it won't.

Verify also which exact injectors are used. Are they for a LS3 or for a LS1?

That's very important, as you need to get the proper injector data for your base tune (for LS1 PCM).

You cannot use LS3 injector data as such (as it is for LS3 PCM [E38]).

The car has been running NA for a year. Built and tuned by a reputable local shop. So if the tune isn't locked, I'll be able to read it and see what's up.
I've tuned quite a few local turbo cars with 2 and 3 bar SD in the P01 and P59 pcm's.

Good point on the knock sensors. I'll have the car to inspect next week. So I'll check that out. Along with the MAF.

Thanks!
