Does the Corvette really have a comparable out there?
The other night while at work, I was reading an article about the comparison between the C6 and the new 911. And a thought came to mind. Although it has been what 40 years that the Vette and the 911 have been compared, is it really a good comparison. IMHO ,the Corvette is in a class of it's own. Here are some comparisons of other cars in the market today.
1. Mistsubishi Evo and the Subaru WRX STi
2. 350 Z, G35 Coupe ( even though they are one and the same), BMW Z4, Audi TT, Porsche Boxster and Honda S2000
3. Ford GT and Ferrari 360 Modena or the new F40
4. BMW M3 and the Audi S4
As you can see the cars mentioned above are somewhat have real competition in the car market. The Corvette IMHO has not. I mean truthfully, can't really compare a Mustang to a Corvette even with the upcoming GT 500, I mean the Mustang have back seats, plus the fact that they are turbocharged - take away the Tc and it would not compare even to a C6 coupe. The Porsche 911 - yes I know it's the closest in performance ( per car mags opinion), but a 911 also have back seats, plus the fact that they are about 20-25 G's more than your average Vette, so price wise there is no comparison. Lets look at one other sportscar - the Viper, again with the new Z06 coming- performance wise they are somehow matched. Again, the Snake is about 20 grand more expensive than the upcoming Z06 ( of course if the intro price is about 65 G's ), besides having 2 more cylinders just to come up with it's hp numbers. Can't really compare huh , some people even dared compare the upcoming Z06 to the Ford GT and the Ferrari ( for crying out loud) I can buy 2 C6 Z06's for the price of the GT or the Ferrari. Again, compare it to the M3, S4 -still no comparison both cars have back seats. Lets not even talk about Japanese sports cars like the G35 coupe or the 350Z, without NOS or Turbo, these cars will be eating dust. I'm not saying that the Corvett is the King of the road, but I can say with confidence that the corvette is one of the fastest street cars you can buy ( duh ). And for me, Vette owners should be proud, because in reality, there are no other cars like it. It is an American Icon.

ALl pricing aside, you'd have a pretty good match if you could double the fuel economy of the 360 . . . and triple it's cargo capacity.
Now an Enzo, that's another story.
I'd give up the cargo space for this one.

The Vette certainly has it's own nitch. Most of the people considering 911's wouldn't look twice at a Vette (but we already know this, don't we)
The stuffy office geek crowd cares more about the "status" of a thing they own than SAE reports!
...and the upcoming GT500.. Wow, a gorgeous car.. and soon to be my daily driver
PS: they have Superchargers, not Turbos

It seems that every car that is designed to compete does not last for instance the Supra (but there may be a new one coming out), the RX-7 (discontinued), the Stealth and Mitsu sister (discontinued). Everything else as you ahve indicated falls just short or is prided too high.
Was just arguing w/ someone about this. Who would pay 20k more for the Boxster over the Vette - answer someone who wants to own the Porsche for name recognition only. The Evo/WRXs and such have impressive 0-60 numbers but its mainly due to the AWD and will a TC 4-cyl. engine pulling that kind of hsp. last that long? Thats as far as the performance can match up. Plus do you want to pay $35k for something that looks like a cheap ***. econobox with a little 2F2F bling added to it? Got my used C5 for $23k....

In terms of heritage alone, the Vette is without equal. Ever since its inception, it has represented the best performance America had to offer. Sure, in the early 80's, the hp was down to low 200's but then again, everything else was way down too because of governmental regulations.
The Mustang, on the other hand, has been a pony car that has gone from the weak, forgettable "Mustang II" to the more respectable GT's and Cobras.
The Corvette has always represented the best of America's mass-produced performance cars. That has continued to this day with the C6 and will be further enhanced by the upcoming C6 Z06.
You could also argue that the factory association with the C5R and C6R programs also make the Corvette unique among American cars. Somebody correct me if I'm wrong, but last I knew, Ford has no comparable supercar on the race circuit comparable to the C6R.
All the above is without regard to how much better looking the Corvette is compared to anything else.

These are my favorites but still wouldn't sell my C5 which is comparable for a hell of a lot less green.

It doesn't get much better for the price tag!
