aft of the pass fuel tank, I believe I saw it there recently! Someone will correct if I'm wrong. I'm changing it out when I get new exhaust next month - looks tough to reach.

Depends on what year your car is. About mid-03 build year, they moved the fuel filter to inside the tank integral with the pump.

Older models, I believe 97-98 use one type of filter, and 99 to mid-03 use another, both of which are on the inside of the driver's side frame rail, (about where the driver's seat is located but under the car).

Anyone know how to go about replacing one in the tank? Does it need replacing and at what interval?
What advantages are there for atank mounted filter?

As mentioned above, it depends on the model year. The following thread talks about the fuel filter placement/location for the various model years along with providing DIY instructions for model year 1999 to mid model year 2003: DIY Fuel Filter

BTW, you may want to update your profile with the model year of your car or provide it in your post when asking questions like this. This will allow others here to better answer your questions.

Good luck with the filter.

For the redesigned FFS fuel system beginning in mid model year 2003, there is no service interval for fuel filter replacement according to the 2003 GM Service Manual. The fuel filter is part of the left fuel sender assembly inside the left fuel tank. The left fuel sender assembly also includes a fuel level sensor, the fuel pump and reservoir assembly, the fuel pump strainer and the primary fuel pressure regulator. The tank has to be dropped to replace the sender unit assembly. You can read more about the redesigned system at the following link:

Just to clarify - the filter pictured in that how-to is the one I need for my '00?

Anyone need a brand new filter for pre-'00 Vettes that I just got from GMPD this morning? :o That's what I get for assuming, I guess.

Actually I think that should be "pre-'99. The 97's and 98's have one style, followed by the 1999 through mid 2003 style.
It sounds like you bought the 97/98 version.
