Default Two Post Lift and Double Car Garage Width

Does anyone have any feedback on a good garage WIDTH for installing a 2-post lift? I already have the lift picked out, and it is ~11.5' wide. I was planning to have a 25' x 25' garage built, and I was curious if the lift will cause any problems. I wanted to make sure I still had enough clearance for another vehicle to be parked in the garage, and still be able to walk around it.

If anyone has a 2-post lift, what size is your garage, and how do you like it?

Default 2 Post Lift

I have a Mowhak A-7 lift in my garage. The garage is 24x32. I should have made it 26x36 with a basement on one side.

It's a little tight walking between the one wall and the lift, but that's because I have a 12'x32 deck on the other side.

Make sure you run enough electric throughout. I ran 220 for the lift and compressor and lots of 110 everywhere else. I also ran air lines (cast iron) with quick connects everywhere.

I have a Rotary A10ip, it also has 11'5" total width. Here's a pic..

You can get by with 2 - 3 feet clearance on each side, you can see the left side is close to the wall. The more the better though.

Hi newgene -

My lift is 11' wide (11' 8" including the pump and reservior).

The instructions call for a minimum of 8" side clearance.

I suggest at least 3' between the post and the wall - that way you can roll a compressor, carry tires, move the toolbox etc.....

My lift also required 9' clearance from the back wall, I went a little more becuse I have a double entrance door on the back wall and I wanted to be able to swing the doors open with a car up on the lift.

My garage is 19.5' x 34'. I wanted a wider garage, but the mandatory setback from the lot line bit me. I have to keep one car straddling the lift and once behind it towards the front of the garage.

best regards -

build the garage with demisions of 2 foot increments, so you don't pay for materials that will be thrown away.

I have a twin post in my shop which is 28' wide with two 10' doors.

The hoist is lined up with one of the bay doors and it all works out well!!

Ace, that is the same lift I plan to purchase. That is where I have the 11.5' spec. How wide is your garage?

I'm thinking I will just go with 28' (wide) x 30' (deep). That should give me enough room to have my mini-shop and hopefully not cost a ton to build. Most of the time, it will have the vette and my wife's Rubicon in it. So, it should be plenty enough to move around and still be able to get some cool cabinets and/or toolchests.

How does that sound?

Build it as big as you can afford or have space for.

You know, it would be better if you would build it closer to Nebraska so I could check it out frequently!! That "sounds" better to me!!

And yeah, garages are like men.. bigger is better!! Oh wait...

Well, I've done the research and have installed the 4 Post lift... Love it to death!! As for Two post lifts, there are plenty that know more than I.. but since it's late and everyone's in bed, I'll give you what I can...

2 posters are cheaper than 4 posters... $1,500 ish compared to 2,000-2,400 ish.

I think most folks do break up the old concrete and pour a nice pad for each post to sit on and anchor to, yes. It's not a big deal but it's a little work... I'd say you're asking for trouble if you don't!

Are most 2 posters 220 volt?

I bought my 4 poster for storage with the ease of working on the car as a bonus!!

Hope this helps for now... Like I said, guys that know the 2 posts will chime in soon enough...

Time Proven Steps for Shop Sizing

1. Determine how big your shop should be.

2. Double that size

3. Add 4 feet in both directions

4. Leave room on the lot to start remodel expansion 20 minutes after
construction is completed.

That sounds like a good size. Should be plenty of room to walk around each way.
