Taking the Vette with you to vaccation in Europe
In April I will stay for 3 weeks in Europe, especially Germany and I'm thinking of taking my C5 with me. Does anybody have experience with this? What would the costs be, where would I need to buy an insurance, and for how long would I be able to drive the car in Germany without registering it there?
Thanks, Robert

If the cost of getting the Vette there is prohibitive, rent something cool there, which I'm told is possible, and knock your socks off on the Autobahn!! An experience you'll never forget regardless of what you're driving.

Well, I am German and thus I know very well how it is to drive on the Autobahn. I am afraid, however, that the costs of renting something as fast as the Corvette there are prohibitive.

Melting Slicks
I am not sure about now, but as far as I know, there are only 2 ways to get it there.
1. Boat (99.99999% of people would use this)
2. Air Freight (Cost would be in the THOUSANDS...probably 10's of Thousands)
We lived in England and had our car boated over. Have to drive it to a port (I think ours was Long Beach, CA) and it takes about a month to get it.
It's a nice dream, but there is no way on earth it would be cost effective to ship your there and back as opposed to renting a super-car there. Take the opportunity to rent a Porsche or something nice to compare and contrast your vette

Safety Car
I think there's a lot to be said for having your own car on an adventure like that. Might not be too pratical, but if we were all pratical, we'd be driving Camrys. You should look into it. I also like some of the alternatives offered, like renting a nice Porsche while you're there.

I wish I had that kind of cash to even think about this option.
here's my $.02. Rent a friggin Yugo or something (if renting a ferrari is out of the question) and then you'll appreciate the Vette more when you get back here.

Shipping Vette to Germany
You might want to check out this article

Shipping your car to Europe is not as expensive as you may think. When I left Germany in 88 it cost less than $500 to ship my car and took less than 2 weeks to pick it up in sunny Florida.
When you think people pay $3K to drive 20 laps at the Richard Petty Driving Experience shipping your Vette to Germany is a bargain!
