Default display on dual zone climate control panel is very dim

The display on my climate control panel is so dim I can't read it. Anyone experienced this or have any advice for me? Beyond the obvious btw -- it's dim with the lights off or on, and changing the intensity of the interior lights doesn't have any impact. There is still a faint display going on if I shade things with my hands and get right up on top of it.

This happened to mine a couple of months ago, and I've seen many other posts about it. It seems that this is a common problem. There is a forum member named David R. (Forum name mandigital) that can fix the problem. You can email him at digitalguy_1@charter.net and see if he can help you.

I just haven't had the chance to pull the control panel and send it to him, but hopefully in the next few weeks. Hope this helps.

David has mine right now... I sent it off to him on Monday. The display hasn't worked since I bought the car last spring. I've read a lot of good things about his work in the forums.

I had him do mine, takes about 1 week including shipping back and forth. He is also on E-bay.

My display is getting darker and darker over time, but my extended warranty company refuses to pay for a replacement of the climate control as long as it doesn't break down completely. I had the same problem in my previous C5 (w/o extended warranty) where I paid a few $100 to get it repaired.

I haven't heard of anybody recommending to knock at the display, but just for the fun of it, I tapped against the front of it with my knuckle and, oh wonder, every knock slightly increased the brightness until it was almost as bright as the radio display.

To my understanding, the problem is due to cold soldering points, but it didn't come to my mind that vibrations could help. This tipp might be worthwhile to be made sticky.

Kawboy, I owe you a beer

What!!! You didn't know you could use the "Fonz" method on it.

Nope...

Who would have thought that with one of the most technological advanced cars in the history of engineering, knocking against a malfunctioning device can repair it?

So, what is the fix for it, or is this some closely guarded secret?
Is it just poor soldering for the connections to the display,
or do u have to replace a diode or resistor?

I might just take it out and search for the problem myself,
but, if anyone has an idea where it at, or have fixed it themselves.

lemme know!
I don't think anyone finds it fun to send something in, for a week or two while your vette sits in pieces, when it possibly could be an easy fix without replacing any parts.

If I do find the problem I will post the exact area and fix for it

GM should have claimed responsibility for this.

Mine has been doing it for the past couple days. I have used the rap method but my knuckles our getting soar I have read different forums on this subject and the cold soldering joints seems to be the problem but I have never found out which exact joints to repair. If you find out you will save alot of CF members here alot of $$ instead of the stealership or having to wait to mail the part in for repair. A big thanks to MachVette for his effort

Noticed mine doing it as well this week.
I didn't mess with it and over the course of about 20-30 minutes it seemed to get brighter on its own.

I fixed mine last summer. I used the directions in this link as a guide http://www.regalgs.org/climate.htm . Seems like the regals have the same problem. Mine was so bad I couldnt see the display anymore so I figured I had nothing to lose. Has been working great ever since. Good luck.

Tom

How did you solder the resistors ? With a regular hot iron or a cold solder ? Was it the 8 black square resistors that are lined up in the middle of the circuit board ? Did you have to do all 8 or was there a few loose ones ? Thanks for your reply I have been looking everywere for an answer and yours hits the nail on the head I will try it next week when I have time off , Thanks
