Default windshield replacement, does HUD matter?

I got a rock chip in my windshield, and I went to have it replaced and it seems the "HUD" version of the windshield is $1200.

If I put a "non-HUD" windshield in (which is like $300), will I still be able to see the HUD? What is the difference between these windshields?

Default HUD windshield

From what I understand, yes you will still be able to see the HUD but it will not be as bright. The HUD windshield has a special layer that helps visualize the HUD readout. HTH

Non hud windshield here... a friend of mine has a Z with the hud glass and there is a slight difference in the clarity/brightness of the hud with the special glass. In my honest opinion though, it's not worth the price difference.

Check out this site though, they say they have hud glass for ~$400:

Forum member WKMCD just installed a HUD in his non HUD enabled 98. This car had the standard windshield. There was zero problems seeing the HUD. I would suggest saving the $$$ and getting the regular windshield as a replacement.

BTW, it's that there's some bluring caused by a double image that makes it not as bright. A windshield is made of laminated glass. That means that there's two pieces of glass with a clear sheet of plastic between them. The glass is glued to the plastic so that in the event the glass breaks, pieces won't fly off. A pretty good safety precaution for a windshield. However, the HUD can reflect from both glass surfaces under the right conditions. The HUD enabled windshield has a light blocker in the plastic between the sheets of glass to make sure the double image doesn't happen.

Won't your insurance cover it?

From what I understand, the non-HUD windshield will work with the HUD. Lots cheaper too.

I installed my HUD using a non-HUD windshield without any problems. I think, as others have said, the HUD windshield will facilitate a clearer/brighter image (mine is dim in the sun and a HUD windshield *MAY* improve.) but not sure that nominal diff is worth the extra
$1000K.

yeah, with a $500 deductible.

I have a buddy in the parts business who can get me a deal on the non-HUD replacement. Also, I am trying to avoid having claims on my insurance right now due to some other, non-related issues.

I can't speak to Texas insurance laws, but I thought most states allow that glass repair is not a fault issue. Most policies here that cover glass so so at replacement cost. You know your policy and state rules, but unless you are certain I'd check my policy.

As for the different winshields I have CE Vert and with the pale dashboard I need to wear polarized sunnies to reduce the glare. This also cuts down on the brightness of the HUD so I would not want to decrease it any further by getting a non-HUD windshield.

Yes, we have autoglass places here in PA that somehow work it out that you don't even have to pay your insurance deductible. You get a new windshield free. Well, not exactly free, as you are paying insurance premiums.

Mine came with the HUD and the "proper" windshield. Mines dim in the sun and darn near invisible with the sun shining in from the rear of the car. Works great at night, though.

Default HUD Windshield

I owned a Pontiac GTP with HUD. Had to replace the windshield. Needed a different part number for the HUD windshield.
