Default Opinions?Thoughts on Drifting?

I have a few friends back home that go to and participate in drifting events (not Corvettes) and now that I have a C5 they want me to join them. I don't plan on it as the tires are pricey, but it got me wondering, why don't we see more Corvettes, or anything other than ricers for that matter, drifting? Seems like the C4-C5-C6 would be pretty good at it. Just wanted to get the general consensus and any opinions about it from the Corvette guys...

My personal feeling is like it or not drifting is/going to be the next big thing is the automotive world. I just finished helping Ryan Hampton set up the suspension on his C5 Z06 which he races in the Formula D series. http://formulad.com/drivers.php?id=x497q029
You can catch it on SPEED channel. Drifting is mainly for the younger folks, but slowly it is earning the respect of the more traditional hotrod crowd. I think in a few years you'll see a drift courses in most major cities.

I think it's a waste of tires dreamed up by kids in imports trying to legitimize illegal street racing as promoted by Hollywood B movies...

The last two international drifting championship races I watched (yes, it was a slow night) were won by a new Mustang and a Viper - both driven by Americans.

Drifting looks cool (to some people) but is ultimately useless in a racing situation. If this weren't the case people would have been drifting for years by now, instead of working to get more downforce to stick to the track.

Take a stock c5 and put it on a track with highly modded drifters and it will walk all over them.

Were they Asian Americans?

Maybe because learning to drift and experiencing an "oops" could be just a tad more expensive in a vette than in a Honda or a Toyota.

It would definitely be nice to see some vettes drifting... I have some friends that are in to it mostly Nissan’s (350’s and 240's), and I have tried it a few times. Besides the basic techniques, its actually quite difficult especially high speed tandem drifting

At the tender age of 57, I enjoy drifting more than ever. I can be sitting at my desk in the middle of the afternoon and before I know it, I'm drifting off to sleep.

Drifting is not racing. Racing is a sport there is a winner and a loser and a precise way to measure to measure results (cross the finish line first, go the farthest in a set time, or set the fastest time). Drifting is more like figure skating where the only thing that matters is what the judges think.

Have you guys ever been to a dirt track race? Have you ever seen sprint cars?

Drifting has been winning races for these guys for years. It's vital to thier races.

Doing it on pavement is kindof a waste of tires, but its pretty fun to do/watch. I think drifting is similar to riding a moped, watching cartoons, courting fat women, etc....It's a blast until people start making fun of you for it.
I'll prolly never do it, but I'm impressed by those who do. Ryse Millen is a super driver.

Drifting is boring. After 5 minutes you have seen all there is to see. However if that is how you choose to enjoy your car ,go for it.

I totally agree, but then again...

I feel that way about all autosports. They can all put me to sleep.

I "accidently" ended up at a drifting competition this summer at Summit Point Motorsports Park. After watching for about an hour I came to the conclusion it has to be the biggest waste of time and money I have ever witnessed...........pointless is the word that comes to mind!

Once I found out how they are scored (by judges like ice skating), I couldn't take it anymore and left and watched some REAL race cars on the Summit 2 mile road course

Seems to me it's a ricer fad. There was some seriously tricked out Jaap Junk there (what the hell is "quad nitrous" anyway?)

Only good thing I saw was quite a few scantily clad Asian hotties

I would imagine engine component and tire company sales staff fully support drifting and would love to see the 10" and 11" wide wheel community of vettes jump right in!
