On average, how much does a new base coat and flame paint job cost?
I'm asking becuase I just got a rough estimate over the phone about this from a guy in S.C. that I was referred to.
He said he would remove the body panels, sand them and fix and any nicks, scratches, and gouges. Then he would use factory paint (base then clear). Put on a pin strip flame job (3-tone blended) and clear the whole car.
The rough estimate he gave me was for $1250.00. I suspect it will be a little more as that always seems to happen.
Think this might be a good deal? Anyway, I'm going to his shop tomorrow for him to look at my C5 and check out some of his previous work.
What's your thoughts C5 gen?

Are you sure he said 1250.00. Must be watercolors. Materials coat more than that . I'm having a fiberglass street rod painted for 12-15k. But it will be perfect. 1250.00 seems TOO LOW ??

My thoughts are, either A- you have a typo & it should be $12,500. or....
B-your estimate was done over the phone in an attempt to get you in so you could get the "real" price......
C-your painter has no clue what he's talking about or this is his first attemt at this kind of custom work.......so run away FAST!

This is my car and when I owned a body shop I would be in the 5K to 6K area. Anything less than 2k I would really watch out for. Like they say, you get what you pay for.

Hi DJ_Critterus -
I paid $2200 14 years ago to have a black firebird repainted - no fancy stuff at all - no body work, just a strip and paint.
I would be very wary of that lowball price, a flame job is not going to be a quick deal......
best regards -

Way too cheap for what you are describing. Red flags should be popping up everywhere.

It seems to me that for doing a paint job and ghost flames it is quite low. I am getting my car painted this winter while it is off the road. They are adjusting my headlight, installing my ground effects and painting my car and a completely different color and my estimate was $1400.00 and that is from one of the best garages in our area and a great friend. They say that just to paint the car is $1000.00 the rest is prep and installation time. So if you are getting the entire car painted and having the flames airbrushed---too low---way to low...Even if it's a decal kit for the flames (I've never done flames so I not know how you guys do them but when we looked at them for my husbands truck it was a stick on kit) still way to low...Be careful especially being it is someone you do not know.
