Default HUD Double Image

From time to time there have been postings about HUD Double Image problems with non GM replacement Windshields. RED99 has suggested that the Pilkington Solar Windshield (non HUD model) seems to be at the root of this.
Does anybody else but RED99 have this problem with the Pilkington Windshield?
I have this windshield and was about to install the HUD when I heard of this.
Any comments would be appreciated.

I am putting in a new shield this week. Not the one it should be for the HUD ($750 vs. $220). Don't know who makes it. I'll let you know how it goes......

Why not the Hud proper wind shield? Is insurance not covering?

Not sure on this - others have reported using non-HUD windshields with no problem, but I don't recall them stating who made the windshield.

I have a stock (factory) non-HUD windshield, and the HUD works
fine. I would expect this is the case with most who have non-HUD
windshields.

The issue would be if the windshield has some kind of coating on the
outside of the glass. The HUD works by reflecting off the *inner*
surface of the windshield. Normally, the A/C tint is on the inside,
and this actually works in your favor with the HUD.

If you introduce a coating on the outside of the glass that has a
high *inward* reflectivity index, then you could get two images,
one on the inside of the glass, and one on the inside of the outer
coating. Due to the angle of the windshield, these two reflections
will be offset by a distance equal to the thickness of the glass
and, voila! - double images.

So, if you can just get the stock GM glass, you should be good to
go. If you get cheap aftermarket glass (or expensive aftermarket
glass with an extra "special" coating), well, that's what you get...

Default Pilkington Solar non-HUD Windshield Double Image

My '99 already has the Pilkington Solar. When the last posting on double image came up I asked RED99 (he started the post) which brand he had. He checked and found it to be the Pilkington Solar. Since there were posts on this before I am trying to find a connection. I have not installed the HUD as yet.
My windshield was replaced before I owned the car due to Stone Chips. I thought that it didn't really matter if the non HUD was used since most posts reported there was no difference. There were reports of Double Image but very few, I never thought the Maker of the glass would have mattered. I still am not sure, that's why I am asking.

My research indicated that a stock windshield may show the double image. However, on a vert or Z06 the shield is thinner... thus not showing the double as well. There are 2 surfaces inside and out. I dunno...... I will see soon.

I have seen pics of the "double image" problem - and yes, it seems to always come down to a non-factory windshield.... that got replaced once before the current owner purchased the car.

Ok.... got the w/s in on saturday.....was worried about the HUD not working or being blurry..

Safelite put the shield in. I didn't get the $700 one went for the $225 glass. Turns out they put in a "DW 1430". This glass is the OEM for the Z06. Even has HUD stamped on it. HUD works just like before. Don't know if they screwed up or what. But got excellent service at a great price!!

All is good.
