Default Catch Can Effectiveness - PART TWO w/PICS

Recently I posted a pic to show how much oil was captured by my new Elite Engineering Catch Can. The first photo shows the amount of oil after about 600 freeway miles and four 20-minute sessions on a road course.

Here's what I found after two more weeks of normal driving (cruising to/from work - No freeway miles). Although it was less than what I found the first time, it's still more than I expected. These things work!

Can you explain the significance of the catch can ?? Where is all that oil coming from ?

Dumb question I know...but Im sure someone else is wondering the same thing.....

As part of the Positive Crankcase Ventilation (PCV) system, there is a hose that vents vapors from the valve cover area directly to the intake. The catch can is a very simple device that has a type of heavy steel wool that allows the oil to condense and collect in the catch can. The vapors pass through and are dumped into the intake minus most of the oil.

Check out the Elite Engineering website. They have a more detailed explanation of how they work.

Great little preventive measure!

What does the CATCH CAN do? Helps prevent oil that travels through your PCV system from getting into your air intake manifold. Over time, it will cause problems (oil in the intake).

I'm glad you asked. Here is an article I wrote, a short while ago. It explains how your PCV valve works and what is the best way to "catch" the oil that normally gets into your intake manifold.

I'm interested to see if a S/C car results in a greater amount of oil accumulation or not. Let us know what you find...
