Default Gas Guage took a Dump!

Well, it finally happened. Riding along and "Bing!" Look at the guage cluster and see a "Check Guages" warning. My fuel guage says "EMPTY"! Another bing and "Low Fuel". BS!!! I stop turn off the ignition and restart and everything is normal. 25 miles later the guage takes a dump again and the message says low fuel once more. Being the retentive idiot I am I fuel up and ADD a bottle of Chevron Techron. Did I do right....?

Seems like once you have this problem (like I do too...) it is going to keep happening. You did GREAT by adding the techron, but the only thing that got my gauges working again (knock on wood) is a double dose of techron and letting it soak on the senders all winter.
This is the first time since I bought the car 2 and 1/2 years ago that the gas gauge has worked well, though mine only went to empty (repeatedly) in the first 1/4 tank -- after using a 1/4 tank the gas gauge worked fine. Every car with this problem is going to act different though, judging from all of the threads on this in the past...
If I were you I would use ONLY Chevron gas from now on though -- cheap insurance

Yes you did right. Had you used "new" gas (from a different gas station?)

Same "Chevron" station 95% of the time. But, now that you mention it I did pull in 6 gallons from a "Aloha" station last week...... Naw.... That can't be it could it....? Sheet, yesterday when the warning said low fuel I Stopped at a 7/11 and added another 6 gallons.... THEN added the Techron. Did 50 miles this morning. So far so good....

You described exactly what has been happening to mine for last 2 wks.

Put Techron in and guage worked for about 50 mi. then EMPTY again.

We don't have Chevron here but I started using BP and Marathon, was using Shell.

I'm going to try another dose of Techron when this tank is empty.

Thought my warranty was going to get it fixed but the dealer said it only covered the drivetrain. It was a 90 day used car warranty.

Chevron is all the car gets. My sending unit has been out for a year. Did the techron stuff... sometimes it works and sometimes it doesn't. I just got tired of spending an additional $12 every fill up.

Who needs a gas gauge anyway??!?! (i do... )

I am a diehard SEAFOAM guy and I recommend running a can or two through your fuel system.

Add a can - FILL up when added. Run it down and then repeat. This should clear up your problem with the quickness.

Just happen to have a can of Seafoam sitting on the shelf in the garage. I'll do that at the next fill-up.

Seafoam cleared my guage problem. The techron didn't seem to work or last as long for me. Good Luck!

Where do you buy Seafoam? I haven't seen it at the auto parts store I frequent.

Same issue here. Adding the Techron does appear to be resolving the problem.

However, the gauge still drops to empty with the first quater tank of fuel or so. When I thought about it, it kind of made sense. After the first quarter tank or so the gauge will not have the same steady exposer, across the entire contact area, to the Techron cleaning additives, causing the issue to re-occur until the contact is good.

I just bought another car for a daily driver, so, I am going to fill up the vette tonight and add another bottle of Techron and let it sit for a week or so. Hopefully this will fix the problem all together.

Just my 2 cents.

Been using Shell here also since it's regarded as "top tier." Now have dreaded gas gauge problem. Not many Chevrons around here anymore, but, there are Texaco stations that, since being bought by Chevron, have the Techron additive. Will switch to Texaco as well as adding the Techron in bottles to see if it helps. Oh, '98 conv.

One can didn't help our '98; will try a 2nd can next re-fill. This is total BS for Chevy's flagship auto.
