Default Legality of Black Out Tail Lights?

Anyone here have blackout covers for your tail lights? Anyone know the street legality of such an addition?

Stay Skary!

I have the Blacked out Halo's. I purchased the covers prior to buying the Halo's, the covers are not legal, they are not bright enough. The Halo's probably are not either. When I'm driving during the day, I turn on the parking lights whenever I see an officer. You just have to decide if you want to take a chance. I would doubt if the covers are "legal" in any state.

Around here, I wouldn't add anything to the vette that makes it harder for people to see me braking.

That kinda defeats the whole purpose behind getting the black outs, doesn't it?

My recommendation is to check with your state Highway Patrol. They should be able to tell you if the blackouts are legal in your state.

For safety purposes, if the blackout significantly reduces the light transmission to the point where you can't tell when the brake light is on in the daytime, I'd question it.

The Halo blackout is so popular because the blacked out versions are just as bright if not brighter than the stock lights.

I highly doubt a LEO would pull you over ONLY for blackouts unless they were of the kind first mentioned.

Aside from legality, The stick on blackouts don't do well on compound curves such as taillights. They have a tendency to wrinkle or crease.

I think he meant that he only turns on his parking lights when he sees an officer and then turns off the parking lights when the officer has passed and the coast is clear.

Too true, driving here in SoCal is a nightmare, you need floodlights to stop these ******* from rear-ending you

Illegal in WI! State law states your lights must be visible up to 500 feet away and can not be obstructed by any material or debris, sorry!

well if they light up just as bright as stock, they should be visible from the same distance as the stock ones right?

Normally an equipment violation, no points from what I understand. I have the black cherry halo's and they look great, brighter than stock. The car is not a daily driver, but it has logged thousands of miles in multiple states with no issue.

I then turn off the parking lights when the officer is out of sight.

I know that. Mine are visible from 500 ft, they are brighter than oem. The other part of the law is debatable. If I get a ticket, I'll pay it and keep the lights on the car. So far, there has not been as issue and the local LEO's seem to be ok with them. Probably no different than your after market exhaust.

I have them and I have never been troubled by the Police.

I see a lot of other Vehicles with them and it seems to be catching on and most Police don't seem to care!

Now as far as the legality I'm not sure, but you also see ones with clear taillights too and red bulbs!

Go figure!

Here's a shot of mine!

Thanks,Matt

I used to have blackouts on my Camaro, I liked the look, but my opinion of them changed when I finally realized that they're just ricey. That is, they defeat or degrade a performance or safety aspect of the car just for looks. Legality schmeegality, they make the lights harder to see and defeat the red reflector function.
