First ...this is by far the MOST discussed topic on this forum.
Second. I really must ask this....Why on earth would anyone replace a column lock......they are all supposed to be removed by the factory recalls???????????
third, the recalls are a safety recall from GM ,they are FREE regardless of milage, time or number of owners......

That's not true. I had a dealer (a member of the Corvette club I belong to) check my VIN. It's had one recall done on it (the 2nd one), and it's not on GM's list of VIN's for the third recall that removed the CL. My column still locks when I turn the car off.

It seems odd to me that a 2003 model would not be on the recall list, but my 2004 Z06 is on the recall list. I would think any models that were older, would need the same recall.
The recalls do not remove the column lock actuator. They only replace the lockplate with a smaller plate and install a relay to simulate the actuator. The GM Harness K kit leaves the actuator in the circuit, and you can still hear the actuator cycle, but the column does not lock.

If you haven't figured it out yet, this was a recall item.
Here's a copy of the recall notice:
Recall SCL
That sucks the dealer took advantage of you. This is a recall and the rework is at no expense to the owner. You might call GM on the number on the Recall notice and discuss.
I went with the bypass - $45.

From what I have heard, they won't do the 3rd recall until you experience trouble with the 2nd one. Can anyone else confirm this?

What does it take to convince members that the GM recall can, and in many cases does, cause additional problems.
I hear of the "c" recall (number 3 I believe). So far it is IMO since no one can describe the technical aspects of it, especially when the Vette has a tune (as described by others it requires a re- flash - thus say bye- bye to your tune).
push for the GM recall procedure are:
1. Employees of GM, and/or
2. Own tow truck companies.

Not sure what you mean by the technical aspects of it, the recall notice describes in detail what will happen and the step by step instructions for the technician. First they add in the harness, still have issue then they flash the firmware, still have issue then they remove the lock plate and replace it with one without holes so it can't lock.
When you look at the detail of what GM wants their local techs to do, that is the reason I choose to just buy the bypass module.

Probably hundreds of threads on this. Search on the words column lock and I'd bet you get lots of info.

This subject takes alot of research and still can be very confusing. Dealers make it all the more so because some handle it correctly (or at least will help fix the problems they caused) others just do exactly like GM tells them.
I did not want the problem to happen to me as I live 140 +/- miles from the nearest dealer that is authorized to work on C5's. I took the car in on an appointment and they knew I wanted the latest recall done so that an aftermarket CLB would work (i.e. no fuel shut off). They refused to do it without GM's authorization and actually having it fail and need the 140 mile tow job. They also refused to reflash the computer back so the CLB would work (i.e. no fuel shut off). As the second recall had already been done by the previous owner my only choice was to have the computer reflashed by a tuner and then add the CLB or look for another dealer who would be more receptive.
I send by computer to Chuck at COW, had it reflashed to stop the fuel shut off and allow the CLB to work. He provided a CLB and also did a street tune on the car, programed out the 1-4 skip shift and a few other tweeks. I am now very happy with the car and should never see the dreaded column lock problem.
Correct me if I am wrong, but I think this is your only positive solution.
