Default Sales tax in vet registration, GA?

I'm about to purchase a vette from someone who is located in NC. I know in GA when I have bought used cars from private partys in the past I have not paid sales tax. My question is will I have to pay sales tax on this car even though it's private party, but purchased in NC? Trust me, I tried to navigate the DMV site and called my local tag phone number (which is only automated) and have had no luck. Thanks!

just tell them it was a even trade, you cannot be taxed on that.

I think its only if you buy from a dealer..Just call DMV and ask you will still have to pay the tag tax

Don't worry the Georgia DMV will catch up with you at tag renewal time, they will get the dreaded ad-valorem tax at that time.

All I know is that on a sale with a trade-in Georgia you pay sales tax on the difference and on the full price on a straight sale. I don't know what the rule is on a car purchased out of state, most states have a way of collecting the sales or use tax when the vehicle is first registered in the state.

Getting information by phone out of the tag offices is a bear.

I looked at www.cobbcounty.org, the only taxes they mention are the ad-valorem taxes. It doesn't mention sales tax. Sales tax may not be due on a sale involving two individuals.

You are correct sir. I just got off the phone with the Cobb County Tax Commissioner's Office. She stated that as long as the name on the title states only the person's name and not a business, I will not have to pay tax. If this person bought the car, but listed it as a work vehicle for his company then I would have to pay. I don't know too many companys registering their vette's as a work vehicle. You never know though.

Bought mine last year, private sale, from a friend in South Carolina, and didn't have to pay sales tax. Ad Valorem, yes, had to pay that.

What if there is a payoff? The plan is to go to the sellers bank where the title is being held and pay cash. Would the bank sign the title over to me on the spot?
