Default How to remove stock exhaust?

I did a search and found some tips but still need some help.

I just got some like new Corsa Pace Cars with the GTR tips delivered. I don't have a lift, but I have a jack, rhino ramps, and jack stands. I know I can't get the car high enough without a lift. I have a hack saw...is that enough to cut out the stock exhausts, AND where do I cut them to get them out? Obviously with just a hack saw, I want to make just one cut on each side. Is that possible?? Or are my choices (1)find someone with a lift or (2)buy some sort of powered saw to cut the pipes out? Thanks guys! Jon

If you can't lift it high enough, you'll have to cut em. Here is the install doc from Corsa's site.

I enjoy DIY on my cars and bikes whenever it makes sense. But I paid a local exhaust shop $50 to install my Pace Car set, took them all of 30 minutes; money well spent. And they did an adjustment later, no charge. Ask around among your compadres for a recommendation to a local shop that understand hi performance.

I used a "SawZall" & a chain-type pipe cutter (for the front). A hack saw will only work in the rear, and take forever. Don't forget safety glasses.

I paid Car X to do mine. Keep them intact, when you go to sell your car put the stock ones back on and sell your Corsa's. David

If you drive the front up on ramps and raise the rear with a floor jack, then use jack stands to hold the car in place take the floor jack and put it up on 2x8's and raise the car another few in. that will give you enough space to remove them without cutting.

If you really want to do it yourself, you can do it with a hacksaw. I tried to get my car high enough to get the exhaust off without cutting, but in the end I ended up making one cut in the pipe between the muffler and the part of the pipe that goes up over the axle. It wasn't really that hard to cut, but it will take a few minutes.
I did raise the car up and disconnect the stock exhaust on both ends first. Also, I dropped the sway bar out of the way as is usually suggested (that wasn't really too hard). After it is hanging down, it is pretty easy to cut the pipe.

When I had my catbacks installed, I just went to a local muffler shop, paid them $50 and they did all the work and never had to cut the stock pipes. Just a suggestion.

A friend and I removed my stock exhaust by the same process as below. The cost of buying a set of ramps can be offset by future mods. And we didn't need to "cut" anything. We installed Borla Stingers and I have the stock exhaust to reinstall when I'm ready to sell.

Or you can back the car up on certain loading docks to access the mufflers, however you MUST have someone watch you do it otherwise you could drive the car off the edge.

I put a set of Tis on my car using the jack with a a 8x8 method. I did not use the ramps. Without the ramps you basically jack the rear of the car up so hight the nose hits the ground. My tip would be to take out the bolts connecting the cat-back from the x-pipe (in front of the rear axle) without the car too high, then raise the car as high as you can (this way you are not under the car when it is way up and more precarious). Note you may also have to unbolt the sway bar.

Its an easy DIY but can be scary if you dont have a good jack. The $25 Wal-Mart jack works fine for changing a tire, but not for serious lifting as you cant ease the car down. It just goes all at once.

Get a few heavy duty jack stands for insurance.

I enjoyed doing it myself but it takes a while and is a little unnerving.

cut them or pay the $50 to have it done at a shop. It is really high and without the right equipment it is dangerous.

Thanks guys for the responses. I am too much a weenie to raise it high enough to get the stocks out in one piece. I already have a spare set of stocks for putting back on the car if I ever sell it. I might just get my son to be the grunt to hacksaw the old ones since at least one person said he used the hacksaw and elbow grease. I will just get some new blades before we start. Still contemplating asking if a local CF member has access to a lift. There is no hurry as the weather prevents driving often now. Thanks everyone for the help!!! Jon
