Prestone and other suppliers offer a Dex-cool which is an organic based mixture in addition to the Propylene Glycol based stuff. All have anti corrosion additives and can be mixed together although not recommended. Prestone and GM have experienced engineers and I doubt that they would fill the Corvette at the factory with a defective mix. They do however use Kentucky Tap water to mix with the coolant so I drain and refill with distilled water and 50% Dex. Darn stuff is always clean although I do refill every two years as I am a typical Obsessive Corvette owner. The average driver idiot out there probably does not even know where the Radiator cap is located. My 2 cents.

What's wrong with Kentucky Tap water ? Some of the most gorgeous women I've met come from Kentucky. Drinking the water sure as heck didn't hurt them.

This is very old news and if you read both side of this issue you will see more positive reports than negative. 14 lawsuits for 40 million vehicles is not a very high percentage.

I think the secret is to change when recommended every 5 years and use distilled water.

You should always use distilled water when adding to your radiator or car battery. Distilled water does not contain minerals that can build up and create problems thousands of miles down the road.

GM will probably settle this for "nuisance value" of which DexCool users will get a $1.50 off coupon for their next purchase and the "lawyers" will get $25mil for their "pain and suffering".

Very true. I had a 3.8L 2001 firebird and the intake gasket failed which got air into the system and I got the lovely brown gunky mess that resulted from that mixing with the dexcool.

It wasn't a dexcool issue. it was a gasket issue. anyway, I had an extended warranty on it so they replaced the gasket, flushed everything out, installed new lifters, flushed the oil several times... and then promptly wrecked my car and totalled it when they test drove it after the repairs...

I don't believe that dexcool is the problem at all... just bad gaskets.

Just changed my Dex Cool after 2 years... I put the new and the old stuff side by side. The only difference was a slight color difference. System looked clean. I used Havoline Dex Cool w/ distilled water plus water wetter. I do think that leaving Dex cool in for long periods Could cause problems. My sons '97 Gran Prix had old Dex cool in it when we bought it and it was a mess - lumpy crap. I say change every 2 years and don't mix the green and Dex together regardless of what they say. $.02 deposited.

This is the right way to do it 50/50 mix and you wont see any issues.

the lawyers in this class action lawsuit will get millions... the people they were championing for l will get checks for 87 cents.

I imagine every mfgr - of any product - eventually finds themselves at the end of a class-action lawsuit. It's not the "filed lawsuit" that should get everyones attention... it's the merit of the case... and the motive of those filing the court action. Only there will the real facts be found.

My dex cool turned to crap and most likely caused my radiator to crack! i will be ordering one today, hopefully it won't be too bad to install myself.

Default coolant age and car miles

I have a 99 corvette with 10,000 miles on it. Iv'e never changed the coolant on it and the dealer recently said that the coolant was just starting to change color. They did'nt mention any damage to the radiator or anything else. Should my car be OK? -J.T.

the mileage in this case doesn't matter it's the age. You're coolant is at least 9 years old. You need to flush the system and put in new.
