oil leaking from oil pan!
i just bought a 2003 c5 convertible with just 15,200 miles on it, i just had my first oil change at 18,300 miles and was told that the oil was leaking from the pan, the pan was very oily, is this a common problem with the corvette? i bought the car from carmax who told me they did a 125 point check on the car and it was in great condition.

That's just not enough information to make a determination if it's a minor or major problem or even a problem at all and just where the oil is originating. You need to get the car on ramps, stands or a lift to see where the oil is originating from. Besides the pan, it could also be coming from the front or rear engine covers or the front crank seal the rear main seal and be blowing onto a nearby area and seeping onto the pan. If you're not seeing any drips under the car on the pavement, you may just need to get under there, clean it up, monitor it for a while to see where it's leaking from and take it from there. Sometimes it's just a matter of re-torqueing with a torque wrench and you're fine.
Determine the source first and then go from there. I've been under lots of C5's and seen what appears to be leaks in the pan only to find a sloppy oil change was done previously or the source was from nearby.

Exactly. Could be something as simply as a leaky oil filter or drain plug! Clean it up, and then monitor to see if it's really coming from the pan.

Unscrupulous oil change places or dealers are notorious for squirting oil on the pans and pointing out to the non initiated that there is a leak and for a price they will change the seal. Not saying this is your case, but, if you wipe it off and check again in a few days, then weeks and you don't see a recurrence or oil on your garage floor, I would smell a rat. A local dealer did that to my then girl friend, I can't prove it, but a year later they told her the same thing and when I reminded her they had supposedly fixed it a year before and should be covered under their year guarantee on work, they rechecked and said oh, the mechanic must have forgotten to wipe the oil off last time... yeah, right! Good luck!

my 2000 has 25k miles and has never leaked a drop of anything. clean it off and drive it a little and see if it is still leaking. make sure the oil filter and plug are tight

I just had a leaking oil pan repaired on our 03' AE. I am fortunate that one of my fellow club members works at a dealership. He is a Corvette specialist and treats each Vette as if it were his own. I took it in to have the door module replaced and a few other things looked at. He found the leak while on the lift. If it's the upper pan gasket, the suspension has to be dropped to remove the cradle. It's a huge job. Our GM extended warranty saved me a ton of money. David

Not a common problem at all. I agree you need to clean it off and then try and determine where the oil is coming from.
