Leaky Butt Fix
Hi AJ,
Thanks for the pictures on the seal replacement. A job well done.I see you took my advice & bought the seal removal tool & used the second design seal(88996703) that we talked about back in feb. when you were considering doing this.Brought back memories of the sore back I had for a few days. Hows the back feeling? Was your alignment affected?
Great job AJ !
I wouldn't call you a shade tree after this job. Most shade tree's would be afraid to try.

Thanks Chuck!
Thanks Rob. I don't believe my alignment was affected, it shouldn't be but I'm getting new tires and wheels so I was going to do an alignment anyway. For some reason, this didn't bother my back. I guess my little stool came in handy.
Maybe someone like Patches will award me my Jr. Mechanics patch!
Sure thing Matt!
Thanks Sarge. Needless to say, you're done for the day after one of my "Dagwood" pizza's!

Look AJ, my lift is still availble and you need to travel 300 miles before WOT running. So...................what's an extra 705.9 miles extra? Wish you were closer, I've got the tools and you have the b*lls to tackle jobs like this! Thanks for the great how-to.

I love write ups like this!
Thanks for taking the time. My car has never dripped, but the differential case does appear dirty compared to everything else under there. Maybe it is seeping.

Great write up, especially since mine has been repaired I think three times prior to me owning the car. I will be saving this and putting it in my file for future reference if needed. Again, many thanks for taking the time and documenting.

So, I considered the possibility of taking stuff apart with air tools but then I just canned the idea all together. I figure since I'm going to have the car until I croak (probably while working on it), I may as well follow the manual as close as possible.
Now if I could just retain what I learn!
Thanks Rob. I would love to know why those repairs didn't hold. I know that there was some lubricant on the center of the seal and my master mechanic told me to make sure that there was some on there. I'm wondering if they used sub-par seals or put them in dry? I guess I'll find out soon enough when it stops raining, after my 300 mile break in!

With air tools, I won't get to experience that hernia I had the first time I broke my brake bracket bolts loose!

Totally awesome write up!
I am sure I will be traveling down that same path soon - consider yourself bookmarked!
However, I should not have skimmed through your thread so quickly the first time as all I saw was...
"Leaky Butt",
this photo..
...and what I thought was the result...
I figured if that was your problem, a "seal" would not be the solution - really glad you cleared up the fact that this was a "pizza" - whew!
Not sure if it would be a solution in this case, but in the past to seat seals like this is always used a large 1/2" drive socket that would just fit inside the outer diameter with an extension?
Also, congratulations on your freestyle garage floor art - it will live on long after the C5 .
