Anyone Having Trouble with a Manual Trans Shifting Into Reverse
I dont think I am doing anything different after 4 years, but last 2 times in car, I had difficulty finding reverse to get out of the garage.
Anyone have an idea if something is going on with the car ?

Only when it is really cold out...which it hasn't been in S. TX. since last November/December.
Putting in a Hurst...will probably make it more challenging in the winter...we'll see!
Good luck with your tranny!

I always go into second then back to try reverse. I'll try third as well. I have a feeling this is common and lining up the teeth with another gear is the easy fix.

A drain and refill with Royal Purple Syncro Max couldn't hurt!!Mine was getting balky getting into 1st and sometimes reverse. Did the RP and boy did it smooth things out!!

Changed mine out at the beginning of June. Mine's a 2000 with 58k miles. I was having trouble with reverse and also sporadic problems getting into first at stoplights. I haven't had either problem since switching to Royal Purple.

I am also having some issues going into first. Can anyone tell me if the Royal Purple can be used in a 98? I am reading that the 97-2000 has some sort of paper filter any only certain brands like Amsoil can be used.

You are aware there is a solenoid on top of the transmission that is called a Reverse solenoid lockout (forget the code it throws). I've had the electrical connector come loose on it once and then another time when i was routing some wires up, back and over transmission (6 speed, I presume all are talking about) I did it again. It is sort of easy to get it loose, so I was a bit surprised about it.
It is virtually impossible to see but if you 'bear hug' the tranny, you'll feel it up there. The connector is a 2 wire clip type, just exactly like the CAGS connector. Feel around up there and see if it is loose or has crap all over it perhaps preventing an electrical connection.
If you really have to pound the stick over to get into the reverse detent, this could be your problem and it WILL throw a code. It drove me nuts until I finally had some help figuring out what the prob was!

I've heard stories about it ruining "paper blocking rings?" in earlier cars but I've had no problems with mine in over a year.
Mine is a 2000.
