GTO 400 HP vs C5 Corvette?
A friend of mine just bought a used Pontiac GTO, 400 HP. I assume it's the LS2 engine.
Assuming both cars are stock, would the 400 HP GTO likely outrun the 345 HP Vette in a drag race?

Unless your friend is John Force you should be able to win. In stock suspension form those cars are VERY VERY hard to launch.
EDIT: I assumed 6sp. because I had one. If his GTO is an auto it should be a good race. I'm not 100% on my facts but I think the auto ran about a 13.3 or so which isn't too shabby.

I've got a 6 psd. Not sure which tranny he has. What's the best technique for launching the Vette off the line?

Well haven't been to a drag strip but my good friend has an LS2 GTO and both are pretty much stock cars. His GTO is manual and mine is Auto and yadda yadda yadda, both were dead even.

A few weeks ago I had a run in with one of the new 400hp goats. Am pretty sure it had a stick. My '99 coupe has the Z51 suspension, A/T, 3:15 gears and active handling. I was in overdrive and I still got him at the light. I backed down at 75mph and he blew by. Didn't think it wise to do 100 mph in that particular area.
I have a friend with a 340 hp Hemi Charger. Even though the Hemi has the torque on me - along with about 800 lbs for the car - will assume my Vette will easily beat him if we raced. I'm sure it will happen sooner or later.

The C5 should win, but if you do race, please take it to the track.

Although it's been a while since my C5 was stock I'd have to give the edge to the GTO.
If you compare the auto GTO to the stock auto C5 400/400 to 350/365
and 3700 lbs vs 3200 lbs it almost looks like a wash until you factor in the 3.46 axle to the 2.73 or 3.15 for the vette.
Be careful you will have your hands full in a stock to stock 1/4 mile race!
And yes I know from where I speak, I own one!
