Castrol vs. Mobil 1
I had a corvette shop tell me yesterday that I should use Castrol 10w-30 instead of the Mobil 1 5w-30 recommeded on my 77k mile 99 FRC. I just changed my oil with Mobil 1 5w-30 and a Mobil 1 oil filter because i'm stubborn, but should i have listen to what he was saying? What have other owners with a few more miles on their vette done different in their oil change? Thoughts...

Most knowledgable mechanics will tell you there is a reason to run 5W30 in modern cars. However they will alos say that high mileage cars could benefit from a slightly thicker oil. GM reccomends 5W30 for a reason and I suspect their R&D folks have better data than your local mechanic.

Due to increased wear (lead) in my Mobil 1 5W-30 oil analysis during the last 3 years, I have switched to Castrol Edge 5W-30 and will do an oil analysis to see if there is less wear. I realize that oil analysis "wear" doesn't always mean wear.
I have noticed that my engine is quieter with Castrol. I have about 122,000 miles on my 1998 C5.
Just noticed your "Semper Fi" and location, thank you for your service to our country. I am retired Federal Civilian Service, worked on 2.75-INCH and ZUNI Rockets .

does anyone think castrol provides better protection than mobil 1, as well as the second part of whether or not the change in 5w-30 to 10w30 in a 77k car is benificial...

Many years ago when I was an auto mechanic Castrol was "the" oil to have. Saying that I currently run Mobil One in my vette. As long as the oil meets the required specs for the engine and application I see no reason to not use it, IMHO

I would not change to a 10W-30 weight oil at 77K unless I lived in a very hot climate.
Having said that, if Castrol doesn't give me better wear numbers, maybe I will go to a 10W-30 weight with 122,000 miles on my car. But probably not, the lighter weight lubes better at start-up and the difference at temperature is minor. Heck, I was thinking of using 0W-30 !

SEMPER FI DEVIL DOG!
Out of the two you mentioned i used to use the mobil 1 syn///switched to royal purple syn, and my oil temps on city and highway crusing have 5-10 degrees
my personal recommendations would be stick with the mobil 1 oil filter, but switch to ROYAL PURPLE HANDS DOWN!!!!!!
I used to live in pensacola btw, 210 Airola Drive o believe was the addy....was young when i lived there...

Been running Mobil 1 in all my cars and bikes for many years and many miles with no problems but there are other oils that meet mfr requirements. As long as you run a quality synth you should be ok. That being said IMO Castrol is no better than M1, Amzoil, etc. And I would stick w/5W30. If it ain't broke don't fix it.

depending on how the oil is going to be used, what part of the country or world the oil is going to be used in, etc.,etc. That part made sense. In my most humble opinion, I would say that oil types means more than oil names. That's my 2c worth.

yes. if you do a search here there was a rather extensive thread on just that subject and the oil analysis many members had done. in addition apparently mobile 1 changed their formula and that put them at a disadvantage to several other synthetic oils. in addition, their analysis (in addition to several articles comparing products) plus the recent rebuff of royal purple for making false claims about their product chose castrol edge to be a better product at this time. as for changing to 10w-30, like someone said, the manufacturer specifies 5w-30 for a reason. unless you know something they don't i'd stick with their recommendation.

Castrol advertises that Catrol Edge has 8x the wear protection of Mobil 1....
I know enough to question truth in advertisng... but if they have the ***** to advertise 8x.... I have to believe it is better.

car manufacturers use what gives them the best marketing, best price from oil company and mostly what meets their standards, thus you are safe with ANY oil that meets chevy specs. I plan on using Quaker State Q syn on next change, currently use mobil 1 with no problems. I used QS regular dino oil in my bikes and in my other cars for years (since late 60s) with no, zero, nada problems. Best advice use what meets specs and makes you feel good at night.

GM does not specifically recommend Mobil 1. They say to use an oil that meets GM4718M specs. No more, no less. Mobil 1 happens to be the factory fill. That is all.
Current GM4718M List..................

Yes, you have 2 separate issues here. Regardless of which brand you prefer (I would use Mobil, but really like Castrol as well), I would NOT change to 10-30.
The lighter viscosity of the 5-30 is critical for lubrication of close tolerance parts at the available pressure/temperature. That I think is pretty much a slam dunk.
That being settled, the brand is the next issue... It is subjective, since it is hard to relate the seemingly tangible specifications offered to the actual needs of the engine. I would use the Mobil, if for no other reason than I do not have facts that clearly relate to my engine, as opposed to general beliefs of oil performance.
