Default Codes P0171 and P0174

Right as I was pulling my car into the shop today to get it inspected, my 'vette threw out two codes I haven't seen before. P0171 (Fuel System Too Lean Bank 1) and P0174 (Fuel System Too Lean P0174 Bank 2). The rat that worked there wouldn't help me figure out the problem, so here I am. The only mod I have is a Vararam intake that I've had on here for two years with no codes. Where should I start? Thank you.

Also, I was on empty right before I went to the shop so I stopped at the nearest gas station (which was in a Wal-Mart parking lot). I think it was called Murphy USA Gas or something. I read that crappy gas could possibly be the reason for a 'vette to throw these codes (even though I got premium). Help?

Have you tried to clear the codes and see if they come back?

Thanks,Matt

This was my experience with this and the codes have never returned.

http://forums.corvetteforum.com/c5-t...and-p0174.html

Tale of P0171 & P0174

Wife came home from a trip in the Vette and said, “check engine light is on.” I asked her what she was doing when it came on and she said just cruising down the highway. I go out and check the codes on the DIC and found the two codes above. I cleared them and came back in the house and logged onto the CF and started searching.

I hooked up HPTuner and went for a ride. The LTFT’s were pegged at 25! Soon, the CEL came back on. I reset the fuel trims and the CEL and soon it was back to 25 and setting the codes again.

Just happens a week before I went for about a 30 minute cruise while scanning and everything was running perfect so I had a recent scan to compare to. Fuel trims were –3 to +7 or so.

First, checked for vacuum leaks and found nothing.

Second, took the K&N off and checked for leaks and cleaned the MAF. Checked the couplings, etc. Found nothing wrong.

Third, checked the fuel pressure. 55# exactly. No problem there.

Was getting ready to put it on the lift and check the O2 sensors when she walks in and says, “hey, I bought gas at some little station in the middle of nowhere, could that cause a problem?” It was a Citgo station in Albion IL. I asked her what kind it was and she said it was the “good stuff.” She said it did say something about a blend.

So…, I hook up a line to the fuel rail, jumpered the relay and pump some out. You couldn’t even smell gasoline in this stuff! It was almost totally clear! After pumping about 14 gallons out I went and filled it up with Shell 93, hooked up the scanner and went for a ride.

Everything was back to normal.

So, the weird gas caused the P0171 and P0174 and I just wanted to share that. I know the problem would have fixed itself when I ran the stuff out but some people could have spent a small fortune at the dealer or a repair shop before figuring out IT WAS THE GASOLINE. (Added 8-11-19 - which was E85 as it turned out)

Hope this helps...

Thanks for the replies guys.

I cleared the code but it came back within a few minutes. I've never had this problem before...that's why I was thinking it could be the gas like "Smaster" said.

I'm going out now to see if I can find the problem. If anyone else has something add feel free to post away.

I just recently picked up these codes as well. A reputable tuner told me that the A/F ratio is off because there is a vacuum leak. The fact that I am throwing left and right bank codes says that it is either before the MAF or the MAF itself.
I am taking mine off today to and checking all of the clamps between my Callaway CAI, MAF, and TB to see if that fixes everything.

Let me know how it goes. I'm going to try to mess around with mine today too.

You guys have any luck with this? Mine developed it a couple weeks ago, and its steadily getting more often, and now it's starting to idle really bad and hesitate when accelerating.
I've inspected all the tubing from the maf back to the intact and don't see any leaks or cracks. Starting on vacuum lines at lunch today.

Mine was pinched on the small tube after the intake. It's where people add the "catch can" at if I am correct. You might want to check that out.

looks like it was the same place on mine, but instead of pinched, it had just fallen apart. Replaced with some fuel line and seems to be running smoother now. Will see how the drive home from work goes.
