Default 70MPH on hoighway and oil pressure low starts flashing

so I am cruising up the I-40 between NC and TN where there is nothing for miles and cell phones do not work and I hear a ding and see a red light come on that says check gauges and see oil pressure is low and the gauge is at 0.
I panic and throw it into neutral and cut off the engine and coast to a safe place to get out of the way of speeding trucks.

After I calmed down I realized that I did not hear any knocking or loss of power.
I have had sending unit problems before but only at warm start ups.
I start checking for trouble codes and go through the DIC to check oil temp and see that I now have 34 pounds of oil pressure even though the engine is not running.
I checked the oil level and it was fine so I fired it back up and the pressure jumped to 4 psi I revved the engine a bit and it did not change.
No valve clatter so I decided to just drive on. All the way home the oil PSI jumped from 0 to 45 it would jump from 4 to 30 in seconds.

Today I went to Advance and bought a new sending unit.
I am going to install it later tonight or tomorrow.

It scared me a moment when it 1st happened but I think all is well and when the gauges go they do not just peg at 80 sometimes they like to screw with your brain.

Mine did that awhile back.a Hope you have good luck with that sending unit make sure you don't over torque it. I think that's they key you only need 15ftlbs.

glad to hear it was nothing bad that you could not continue your drive. Those things tend to foul up and good luck with the install.

Mine is bad as we speak, I made a relocation kit to install as soon as I get the time to remove the intake to change it.

I went to advance auto and bought a new one today and installed it and all is now fine.
They have the brass ones that I think are the better ones.
Someone had already installed one before using the cutting method so it took less than an hour to do.

I really should have replaced it before now because I knew it was going out.
Next time I will not put it off because with as many miles as I have on that car one of these days when it says 0 ot may mean it.

Having that message come up would make you feel kind of .

Hope all it is is the sensor and good luck with the install.

The new sensor seems to be working fine,
I left the cowl cover and wipers off just in case and so I could check for leaks.
I am also thinking of having the cowl painted to match the body while it is off the car.
120 miles today and no leaks and oil pressure is where it should be.
I am glad is was only the sending unit because when I saw 0 psi at highway speed out in the middle of nowhere with no cell phone service I almost needed fresh underwear because I just knew the engine was toast.
