Missing spring. . .
On the right hand side looking at the door, there is a spring that snaps the door shut/open. I can only assume that your spring has come off somehow. The door itself has two small plastic pins that it pivots on, once you carefully remove the two you can remove the door. But you'll have to remove the console to get in behind it so as to fix the spring issue. Good luck !

You guys do realize that the inner "steel"door is supposed to stay open, it only closes when the outer plastic door pushes it closed (so that the heat from anything inside the ashtray cant damage the outter door) right?
Just checking . . . . . .

Yup, thats a wierd looking spring on the plastic door (possibly on right side if Im remembering correctly).
I deleted my ash tray when I moved the heat/ac controls down so I cant check for ya, but its probably there (I mean inside the console somewhere).
Its only like four bolts and three screws to get the whole center console out to where you can look in there. Might wanna search for "double din install" and see if you can find the nice pictorial how to that I cant seem to find in my favorites. It will show whats involved in getting the center console out to where you can look for the spring (if you cant just poke around in there with it inplace and see if you can find it).
Only takes a few minutes to get it out if ya wanna go that route.
