Sun Guns! Low-profile HID Projectors from JWM/mtndv8 installed
I received one of the first 5 sets of the new Sun Guns low-profile HID projector sets from mtndv8 (Michael Bassett) last week and, despite being in the throes of a major job change and move from Southern Indiana to Southern California, I had to stop everything I was doing and install them this weekend. It was impossible to resist - they are that gorgeous.
Michael did a phenomenal job of designing and refining these replacements for the OEM headlight sub-assemblies. The effort that went into these is obvious from the direct-replacement installation that requires no modification of any components (like the ACA's do) to the beautiful quality, finish and construction of these babies. Everything required is included and the installation instructions are very detailed and well written and illustrated.
I spoke with Michael before and after I installed these and it's obvious he put a lot of thought into perfecting these. As a design engineer, I can tell you that reverse-engineering a system like the C5 headlights in order to design a replacement system is no small feat - it's fraught with problems and complications and is usually an exercise in frustration. Michael succeeded here handily - he has a winner here IMHO. The anti-jiggle provisions along with the ability to fine-tune the adjustments of the lows vs. highs on the Sun Guns (unlike the ACA's) are two examples of why these are so good.
Enough with the talk. I won't bore you with the installation details right now - let's get on with the pics! (Sorry about the quality - Mrs. Patches is in SoCal this week looking for the new abode and has the good camera with her.)
One of the projector assemblies
Custom stabilizing and stop brackets
HID bulbs replace the lows in the Hellas
Here they are! Closed, that is.
Open!
Close-up
Side view
Here are a couple of shots showing what they look like from the cabin
Because they don't travel in as wide an arc as the stockers when they open, they pop open very quickly. It's like - pip! Very cool! I had planned to do the aiming procedure and a side-by-side comparison with Mrs. Patches' ACA headlights in her coupe this evening but it's raining so that'll have to wait until at least tomorrow. They did look really good when I had them on in the garage though. Stay tuned for more . . .
Thanks to Michael and JW for including me in the initial release of these. I always enjoy sampling and reviewing new products from our vendors here.
Oh, and, I did pay for these so this is not a gratuitous post.
P. S. Yes - the shrouds/bezels are still in process.
P. P. S. Don't smother JW and Michael with emails about this - they're working as fast as they can.

Wow....this is odd timing as I was just wondering the other day if the "lid" could be adjusted to come up only part way with smaller headlights.
...and here they are!
Sweet...

Wow! Looks great! Can't wait to see the finished product with the final shrouds.
Patches, are you selling your great garage as is or are you going to pull up the tiles, tear down the Bend Pak and move it across country? If not, I sure hope you sell your house to a car guy!

Ed, your Sun Guns while even in their unfinished state... it is obvious that the finished product will look spectacular. They are truly bad... excellent execution. Looking forward to seeing the finished product.

I'll be working for a medical company in Irvine and we are looking for a home hopefully in Temecula. I know, it's a long haul but we love the town and friends we have are gravitating there as well.

There's also a very nice road called Ortega Hwy between Temecula and south OC. A nice twisty way to commute, although there's always the occasional 'poke that holds up traffic. When it's clear though, it's legendary fun!
Keep your new neighbors updated on your location and we'll see you at a get-together. Cars and Coffee at the Ford campus in Irvine is amazing!
